Box Score

(Salem, MA) The Endicott baseball team finally got back to action after more than a week off since returning from Florida. Because its home field was still too wet to play, Endicott crossed the bridge to Salem and was the home team on the road. Taking the ball for the Gulls was freshman, lefty Jon Bedard.

The south paw threw a jem allowing just two runs (one earned) in five plus innings of work. He kept the Salem hitters off balance with a good mix of moving fastballs, a curve and a change up. After not allowing a hit through three innings, he finished with four strikeouts, three walks and four hits. He was also the benefactor of some solid defense. On the first hit Bedard allowed, a sharp single down the third baseline, left fielder Erik Fields cut it off and threw out Salem's Mike Spinney who was trying to stretch it into a double. In addition, Kevin Donahue started a 4-6-3 double play in the third, Steve Vidmosko ranged far to his right to snag a hard hit ball for an inning ending force at second in the fourth and Kowen Drake snagged a smash at third base to keep a runner off base.

On offense, the Gulls scored in each of the first four innings to take a 7-1 lead. In the first, Erik Fields led off with a walk and \#2 hitter, Brendan Tiani moved him to third with a well-executed hit and run. Fields then scored on Matt Bishop's 4-6-3 double play ball. With one out in the second Dan Gomez lined a single to right center. He went to second on Kowen Drake's slow roller to the left side. And Pat Vincent singled in Gomez with a single to right.

The Gulls opened it up to 5-0 in the third behind four hits. Fields got on first as a lead off man again; this time he was hit by a pitch. He went to second on a ground out and Matt Bishop doubled him in. Greg Allain singled Bishop to third and Donahue scored him by pounding one through the right side. Gomez got inning's third RBI with a sharp single to left to score Allain.

In the fourth, Pat Vincent opened the inning with a single. He went to third on Field's hit and run single. Tiani scored Vincent and advanced Fields with yet another hit and run play. Allain then doubled in Fields with a blast to left-center.

From there the pitchers took over. Bedard was lifted for Jon Trowt in the top of the sixth with the score 7-1. Trowt allowed two hits and two runs (one charged to Bedard) before he got loose and settled down. He went on to pitch the 7th, 8th and 9th without allowing a threat. For his efforts he earned the save.

The Gulls improve to 4-3 while Salem drops to 7-3. The Gulls return to action on Thursday against CCC rival Colby Sawyer in a week-day double head that begins at 3:00pm in Beverly. That game is a make up for the March 26 rain out.
