Gulls Blank Salve Regina Behind Sawchuck's Two Goals

Box Score

BEVERLY, Mass. – In their penultimate home game of the 2011 regular season, the Endicott Gulls scored a 3-0 win over Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Salve Regina at Endicott Stadium behind two goals from freshman Emily Sawchuck (Cumberland, Maine) and a solid second-half defensive effort. The Gulls improved their overall record to 7-8 and continues to sit at the top of the CCC table with a 6-1 record, tied with University of New England.

Sawchuck, who now has eleven goals on the season, put the Gulls up 2-0 on her second goal of the game thirty-two minutes into the contest. The freshman forward took a pass from the right side from junior Taylor Matties (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and slammed home a one-timer. Sawchuck had opened the scoring with an unassisted tally five minutes earlier.

Junior Melissa Enright (York Beach, Maine) capped the scoring five minutes after half-time when she finished a hard shot after a Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine) penalty corner. Matties picked up her second assist of the afternoon on the play, and now has nine on the year to lead the team.

On the stat sheet, the Seahawks dominated the first half, firing ten shots and winning the same number of penalty corners. Junior goalie Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) made all four of her saves in the first half en route to collecting her second shutout of the season. However, in the second half the Gulls defense locked down on the visitors, not allowing them a shot or penalty corner and subsequently sealing the shutout victory.

Endicott had eleven shots in the second half, finishing with an 18-10 advantage in the game. They also took 10 penalty corners after halftime, and 12 in the game to Salve Regina's 10. First year goalie Murphy McCann made four stops in defeat for the Seahawks.

The Gulls will finish their home schedule on Saturday afternoon when they host Gordon College. Endicott will celebrate Senior Day with a 1:00 pm start. Salve Regina, who falls to 5-9 (1-6 CCC) will travel host Nichols College on Saturday in a 5:00 pm conference test.
