Luke Somers, a senior from Hampstead, N.H., has been chosen for the focus of this installment of the “Endicott Student-Athlete Spotlight” for his works both on the field of competition, and even more important, off of it. Luke is a History major and is minoring in Education. We were able to catch up with the football captain and defensive back and ask him a few questions for our new segment.
Why did you choose to be a Division III
student-athlete?
I wanted to be able to play sports and focus on balancing
academics, social life, and other interests at the same
time.
What do you like most about being a student-athlete at
Endicott?
The friendships I have made with teammates and athletes on other
teams have been amazing, as well as the fact that Endicott teams
are extremely successful.
What are some of the greatest lessons you have learned
from being a student-athlete?
Being a captain of a large team, I have learned the importance of
focusing on the details to make sure every person knows exactly
what they have to do to win.
Who have been the most influence people in your athletic
career?
My dad, who created the football program where I first got to
play.
How would your teammates describe you?
Someone who will be available to help 24/7.
Do you have any pre-game/pre-event rituals? If so, what
are they?
No, I like to change it up.
What is your greatest sports moment?
Winning the Conference championship last season and winning the
state championship my senior year of high school.
Which public figure (athlete, politician, entertainer,
etc) would you most like to meet and what one question would you
ask them?
Brett Favre, I'd ask if we can play catch?
What internships have you completed (or are a part of
now)? What benefit have you gotten out of them?
Two teacher observation internships and am currently in my
semester internship at Endicott's Boston campus. I love working
here and I've gottent to see how a smaller sized college is able to
operate in its second year of existence.
If you have been involved in community service projects,
what project has been the most rewarding and why?
Working with our TeamImpact teammate, Vince. He has cerebral palsy
but a better outlook on life than most people. We go skiing
together all the time which is rewarding because he applies the
same discipline and focus as I do for football.
Name three things on your "bucket list".
Live in another country, start a company, and run for an
office.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years after graduation?
What is your dream job?
Hopefully starting my own school.
What would you say to someone currently in high school who
is considering attending Endicott?
I would say that the school has so many opportunities for
students, I'm still finding them as a senior.
