INTERNSHIP INSIGHT: Grote Cultivates Network To Secure Hartford Athletic Internship

BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott College is a pioneer in requiring comprehensive internship experiences in every program of study for undergraduate students. Emily Grote (Glastonbury, Conn.), who is a Sport Management major and a member of the women's soccer program, recently completed an internship at Hartford Athletic. Here's a look into her internship experience.

1) Why Hartford Athletic?

Hartford Athletic first appealed to me because I play soccer and I thought it would be interesting to work in the sport in a professional setting. The title I have is an Operations and Event intern and I liked that because I am able to see all the different aspects of the organization.

2) What was the process like to obtain your internship?

I applied to this internship online through teamworkonline. I then connected with the director of operations on LinkedIn and I got an interview. I had a Zoom call with them and then I heard back about a week later from them saying I got the internship.

3) Describe your overall internship experience.

I really am enjoying my experience. I get to work with a lot of different people with a lot of different jobs. I've been an away team liaison, credential supervisor, and merchandise seller. I also have helped set up and clean up for home games as well as other games where teams have played in the stadium, like Hartford City FC, AC CT, and other soccer camps. I've opened and closed the stadium by myself as well.

4) What have you learned from your internship?

I've learned how the operations work for game days and all the different pieces to make sure everything runs smoothly. For example, one of our games was on ESPN so we had to make sure that the game started on time or else the club would've been fined.

5) How will this internship help you in your career moving forward?

This has helped me for my future because it's given me a better perspective on what I want for my future career. I really enjoy the operations side of sport management and I want to pursue that in the future. I also have connections that can help me as I go forward in sport management.
