BEVERLY, MA - Erica Hunt (Colchester, VT/Colchester) scored two second half goals to lead the Gulls past Wentworth Institute and into the semifinal round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference post season tournament.
The two teams played back and forth in the game's early going and neither squad could get to the goal. That is until Margreta Weber (Bedford, NH/Manchester West) dealt the Leopards a serious blow with three seconds remaining in the first half. She drilled shot off a rebounded corner kick that found the upper corner of the net. The goal gave EC a 1-0 lead and dampened any Wentworth momentum.
The Gulls took advantage of the momentum shift as Hunt scored the eventual game winner three minutes into the second half, giving EC a two goal lead. Hunt added a second goal after she raced down the sideline and took a shot that hit the near post and trickled across the goal line, giving EC a 3-0 lead.
Despite the daunting 3-0 score Wentworth continued to fight coming up with a goal as Callin Wall (Guilford, CT/Guilford) redirected a corner kick through traffic and past EC goalkeeper Tina Loguidice (Hyde Park, NY/F.D. Roosevelt), making it 3-1. The Leopards nearly scored again moments later as Katie Wetherbee (Bath, ME/Morse) found herself behind the EC defense but lifted her shot over the cross bar and out of play.
Endicott got strong play from its defense anchored by Staci Wiencko (Pembroke, MA/Notre Dame Academy) and Kelly Cosgrove (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich) as they held Wentworth to just seven shots. Loguidice also played well making three saves in the win.
With the win the Gulls earned a trip to the conference semi-finals were they will meet Curry College. That game will be played at Endicott Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, most likely at 3:00 or 3:30pm. Fans are encouraged to check ecgulls.com to confirm the start time.
