Box Score

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott College field hockey team dropped a gut-wrenching 2-1 decision in double overtime to St. Joseph’s College of Maine on Wednesday night in non-conference action in Beverly, Mass. The Gulls drop to 10-7 overall this year while the Monks improve to 12-3. St. Joseph’s Melanie Allen (Jackson, N.H.) netted the game-winning goal in the 96th minute for the 2-1 victory.

The first 10 minutes of action was uneventful as the teams traded possessions at midfield. The Monks finally gained control inside the circle as St. Joe’s took a 1-0 lead on an Endicott miscue. The Gulls believed the play inside the circle was dead, however, Julia Ostrowski (Albany, N.Y.) found and open Kayla Nowell (Bridgton, Maine) for an early tally. Through the rest of the half, both teams exchanged penalty corners and escaped with no damage as the Monks entered the break with a 1-0 advantage.

Coming out of the half, Endicott decided to ratchet up the offense as the Gulls took 12 shots in the frame. St. Joseph’s Meaghan Johnson (Portland, Maine) was up to the task through the first 30 minutes of the second half as she turned away seven Endicott attempts. The Gulls finally broke through on a penalty corner when \#Joanne Reid\#’s (Clarksville, Md.) original shot attempt was blocked and \#Anna Giannoni\# (Granby, Conn.) rebounded the miss, firing the ball on net which skipped past Johnson for a 1-1 tie.

St. Joe’s had a corner with less than a minute remaining, however \#Alexandra Parese\# (Wilton, Conn.) broke up the play and forced overtime.

Endicott started with possession in the first OT however the Monks had the best chance to end it early. Ostrowski took the ball on a one-on-one with Endicott’s keeper \#Taylor Teixeira\# (Exeter, N.H.) and the freshman made a diving stop on the break to end the threat. The Gulls then returned the favor as a minute later a \#Joanne Reid\# shot glanced off a St. Joe’s stick and towards the top of the net; however, Kimberly Glynn (Danvers, Mass.) made a defensive save before the ball had a chance to enter the net, keep the game knotted at 1-1.

St. Joe’s had another chance when Courtney Rague (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) had a wide open look at the net that just missed to the left of the post. Neither team had much of a chance after that as time expired into the second overtime.

St. Joe’s had the first opportunity in the overtime and the Gulls were tested early. Shots from Ostrowski and Rague both missed their mark while the Monks also were awarded a penalty corner but the Gulls defense held their ground. Giannoni had the best chance for Endicott but was stonewalled by St. Joe’s Meaghan Johnson on the break two minutes into the extra frame.

Finally, with less than four minutes to play in the game, the Monks broke out on a 2-on-1 opportunity against Teixeira. Teixeira stopped Ostrowski’s original attempt but could not recover on the rebound as Melanie Allen notched her second goal of the season to send the Monks home with a 2-1 win.

St. Joseph’s Meaghan Johnson picked up her 11th win of the season by making nine saves in the contest while Kim Glynn added a pair of defensive saves. Teixeira suffered the setback for the Gulls despite making eight saves. Endicott’s \#Lindsey Mills\# (Arlington, Mass.) also picked up a defensive save in the loss. The Gulls held the edge in shots at 19-14 however St. Joe’s had five more penalty corners than Endicott (13-8).

Endicott looks to rebound on Saturday when the Gulls host Regis College in the regular season finale for both teams scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Monks continue their six-game road trip to end the regular season as St. Joseph’s travels to Simmons College for a 1:00 p.m. matchup on Saturday as well.
