Rheaume, Fallon Lead Gulls into Preseason Camp

Rheaume, Fallon Lead Gulls into Preseason Camp

Aug. 21, 2006

BEVERLY, MA - The Endicott field hockey team made its fourth consecutive ECAC appearance in 2005, despite having just one senior on the roster in Ashley Wallace `06 (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills). First-year head coach Breanne Wojnarowicz led the Gulls to a 5-3 conference record and 13-7-1 overall. Endicott posted 10 shutouts and went 6-1 at home on the new home on North Field, losing on the road in the CCC semifinals to eventual champion New England College (2-1 OT).

The Gulls open the season at Springfield College in the Dottie Zenaty Invitational Tournament against RPI. The team's home opener is September 7, 2006 versus Framingham State College (7:00 PM).

Endicott's success last season began with netminder Erin Curry '07 (Hampstead, NH/Gould Academy), who was solid in goal. Recording 11 shutouts, Curry stood among the Division III leaders in goals against average (0.92) and save percentage (.863) while earning CCC First-Team All-Conference honors and Second-Team Regional All-American honors.

Wallace provided the Gulls with veteran leadership. The lone senior controlled the middle of the field, stabilizing the defense and creating plenty of offense as well. Wallace - feared by many with her strength, speed, and powerful shot, led the team in assists with five, and tallied seven points in her final season. She capped her career as a First-Team All-CCC selection and-team Regional All-Americans.

Helping Wallace were forwards Jennifer Rheaume '08 (Blackstone, MA/Blackstone-Millville Regional) and Lindsay Fallon '07 (Southampton, NY/Southampton), who put the finishing touches on the attack. Rheaume put home 15 goals for EC to lead the team in scoring and teamed up with Fallon, who scored 12. The talented players combined for 58 points and should lead the offense again in 2006.

Through the midfield the Gulls will look to Caitlin Murray '07 (Templeton, MA/Gardner) for speed and transition. Murray, who was a CCC Second-Team All-Conference selection, possesses the stick skills and defensive eye that will help generate a strong attack for Endicott. She will joined at midfield by Ashley Meunier '08 (Hartland, VT/Kimball Union Academy), who scored five goals in 2005. Great field vision and a powerful shot make Meunier a key contributor at both ends of the field. A valuable two-way player, Chelsea LaClair '09 (Middlesex, VT) will round out the Endicott midfield.

The Gulls defense was one of the strongest in the conference. Jenny Beech '09 (Devonshire, Bermuda) led the team in defensive saves, stealing three potential goals from opponents. Her deception, knowledge of the game, and international playing experience make her a key part of the Gulls' defense.

With a strong nucleus and Wojnarowicz's first recruiting class, Endicott should compete for the CCC crown in 2006. Rheaume, Lyndsay Woods '07 (York, ME/York) and Katie DeFeo '07 (York, ME/York) will captain the club while high school Globe All-Scholastic standout Andrea Bagley '10 (Foxboro, MA) should bolster the goaltender. While Maine native Kelly Flaherty '10 (Portland, ME/Portland) and new teammates Melissa Newton `10 (Athol, MA/Athol) and Megan McBride '10 (Saugus, MA/Saugus) will look to spark the Gulls attack. The defensive minded and state championship finalist, Sarah Holmgren `10 (Warren, MA/Quabog), will add to the EC backfield.
