No. 1 Baseball Breezes Past MIT, 9-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The No. 1 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team picked up a non-conference road win at MIT on Wednesday afternoon, 9-2.

WP (6-0): Charlie Hale (Brookline, N.H.) — 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
LP (0-3): Tye Phoenix (Naples, Fla.) — 1.2 IP, 1 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 0 K

The Gulls jumped on the Engineers with a five-run second inning and didn't look back the rest of the way.

The early rally was highlighted by a TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine) two-run double down the left field line, which plated Dylan Pacheco (Dartmouth, Mass.) and AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.) for the Blue and Green.

In the next inning, Danny MacDougall (Taunton, Mass.) ignited another miniature rally, as he led off the inning and stole his CCC-leading 29th base of the season to get in scoring position with no outs. He was then batted in by the red hot John Mulready (Peabody, Mass.), who sent a shot into center field for an RBI double to give the Gulls a 6-0 lead.

The Blue and Green continued to pile on runs in the fourth, as MacDougall's baserunning caused some havoc for the Engineers in the field. Amidst the three runs that scored via wild pitches and passed balls in the inning, MacDougall also swiped his 30th bag of the season.

The Gulls headed into the fifth with a 9-0 lead, and they relied on their pitching the rest of the way to lock up the win.

Hale contributed another solid start in his stellar freshman season, limiting the Engineers to just a run in his six innings of work.

He turned the ball over to Brady Stuart (Hudson, Mass.), who closed out the last three innings and featured a line of one earned run, two hits allowed, no walks, and five strikeouts. The sophomore right-hander also earned his second career save with the three-inning effort (first this season).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Gulls improve to 17-6 in the all-time series versus the Engineers. They have won each of the last four meetings, and prepare to face the Engineers again on Sunday (Senior Day, 1 PM).
  • Robbie Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.), Liponis, and MacDougall each logged multi-hit performances in the contest.
  • Caleb Clark (Gloucester, Mass.) made the start in right field for the Gulls (first-career start). He went one-for-four with a double and an RBI in the win.
  • Since his return from injury last week against UMass Dartmouth (4/24), Mulready has gone 9-for-16 (.563 AVG) with five RBI and four runs scored.
  • The Blue and Green are now 11-1 away from the Nest this season.
