No. 1 Baseball Rallies Late, Tops Trinity 5-3

BEVERLY, Mass. — The No. 1 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team overcame two late deficits to take down Trinity, 5-3, in a Tuesday afternoon non-conference matchup at North Field.

WP (2-0): Evan Scully (Maynard, Mass.) — 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
LP (1-1): Tyler Corditz (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.) —
1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Trailing by two in the bottom of the seventh, the Gulls finally broke through for their first run of the contest as John Mulready (Peabody, Mass.) sent his third hit of the afternoon through the right side of the infield, scoring TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine)

Pinch running for Mulready, Trevor Kamuda (Groveland, Mass.) stole second to get the tying run in scoring position, and was batted in with AJ Hamm's (Shrewsbury, Conn.) RBI single up the middle to knot the score at two.

In the top of the eighth, the Bantams regained a one-run lead (3-2), but the Gulls escaped any further damage thanks to Scully, who inherited a two-out bases loaded jam and struck out the first batter he faced to retire the side.

To lead off the bottom of the eighth, Caleb Clark (Gloucester, Mass.) ignited the Gulls' rally with a base-knock to center. After he advanced to second on a sac bunt from Danny MacDougall (Taunton, Mass.), the Blue and Green tied the score once again with Liponis' RBI double to right-center field.

At the plate for his first at-bat of the afternoon, James Benestad (Northborough, Mass.) sent the first pitch he saw down the left field line, scoring Liponis and giving the Gulls their first lead of the game at 4-3. Benestad then scored after Robbie Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.) drilled a fastball into left field for an RBI single, giving the Gulls a two-run cushion heading to the ninth.

In the ninth, Scully shut down the Bantams offense with a scoreless frame. The last out came on a highlight play he made off of a comebacker, which he snagged behind the back and then threw over to first to lock up the 5-3 home win for the Blue and Green.
