NCAA TOURNAMENT: No. 4/8 Endicott Blanks Bridgewater State, 6-0; Gulls Set Program Wins Record

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — The No. 4/8 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team defeated Bridgewater State, 6-0, in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening at Alumni Park.

WP (6-1): Rian Schwede (Whitman, Mass.) — 6 2/3 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K
LP (4-4): David Kerns (East Cambridge, Mass.) — 5 1/3 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

The Gulls were efficient on offense scoring three runs via sac flies (2nd, 5th, 8th), two on singles (6th, 8th), and one on a double in the fifth.

John Mulready (Peabody, Mass.) highlighted the lineup with two RBI, while Joseph Millar (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.), Caleb Shpur (East Canaan, Conn.), Nicolas Notarangelo (Taunton, Mass.), and Jake Nardone (Wakefield, Mass.) all drove in one run apiece.

Kyan Bagshaw (Amherst, N.H.) also played a pivotal role in the victory by tossing 1 1/3 scoreless frames out of the pen.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Bagshaw stymied a potential Bridgewater State rally when he stranded runners at first and second via a lineout to third base.

The Gulls' pen, including Will Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) in the ninth, only allowed one runner to reach scoring position the rest of the way.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott earned its 41st victory of the season, a new program record (2022: 40-10).
  • Schwede recorded his second straight scoreless outing (6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K vs. Salve Regina in CCC Championship game on 5/13).
  • Shpur made a sliding catch at the warning track in the left-center gap to rob an extra-base hit and a potential run from the Bears in the bottom of the sixth inning (EC 4-0).
