No. 10/10 Baseball Tops Bates, 6-1

BEVERLY, Mass. — The No. 10/10 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team defeated Bates, 6-1, in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at North Field.

WP (1-0): Chris Jenkins (Mansfield, Mass.) — 2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
LP (1-1): Luke Linnehan (Hingham, Mass.) — 3 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
SV (1): Max Tarlin (Sharon, Mass.) — 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K

After falling behind 1-0 to start the matchup, Caleb Shpur (East Canaan, Conn.) responded for the hosts with a solo homer to left field in the next half inning to square up the contest.

Nicolas Notarangelo (Taunton, Mass.) and Jake Nardone (Wakefield, Mass.) eventually gave the Gulls the lead for good with RBI knocks in the third inning (3-1).

Endicott also tacked on one more run in the fourth (wild pitch) and two more in the eighth (throwing error, bases loaded hit-by-pitch) setting up the relievers to handle the rest.

Jenkins was credited with the win as the most effective pitcher out of the pen after following John Connolly (Attleboro, Mass.) who tossed 3 1/3 innings in his first start of the season (3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K).

Will Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) finished off the seventh inning (2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K) before Tarlin shut the door on his 11th career save over the last two frames save by punching out every batter he faced.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is now 13-16 all-time against Bates.
  • Shpur leads the team with three homers this season.
  • Tarlin struck out three batters looking and another three swinging, the last of which on an elevated fastball to punctuate the win.
  • The six strikeouts matched Tarlin's career-high against Suffolk on 4/1/22.
  • The Gulls stole a season-high six bases in the victory.
  • Shpur swiped a career-high three bags, while Danny MacDougall (Taunton, Mass.) stole a career-high two bases.

No. 10/10 Endicott (3-0) visits No. 28 Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday, March 12 at 4 PM (EST). Bates (3-1) travels to RPI this Sunday (12/2:30 PM).
