Endicott Claims Mayor's Cup Title with 2-0 Win Over Oneonta

The Endicott women's soccer team poses with the 2022 Mayor's Cup trophy.

ONEONTA, N.Y. - With the Endicott women's soccer team's 2-0 win over the Red Dragons of Oneonta, the Gulls claimed the 2022 Mayor's Cup title on Sunday afternoon. The 2-0 win on Sunday paired with the teams' 4-1 win over Hartwick on Saturday to give Endicott the 2-0 record in the Invitational, and a 6-1 scoring advantage in the tournament.

The Gulls placed six total members on the All-Tournament Team, highlighted by Defensive MVP Angelina Venditti (East Lyme, Conn.) and Offensive MVP Grace Jewett (Millis, Mass.). Also earning All-Tournament honors for their standout play over the weekend were Carly Matthews (Suffield, Conn.)Elizabeth Healy (Plymouth, Mass..), and Jacqueline Ruggiero (Dedham, Mass.)

In the 2-0 win over Oneonta, Endicott's defense unit once again stifled the opponents' offense, only allowing three total shots and just one shot on goal through 90 minutes of play. Endicott's keeper Jacqueline Ruggiero made the one save to 4-1 overall, with her third shutout in the four wins.

Offensively, it was Riley Rischitelli (North Brookfield, Mass.) who got the Gulls on the board mid-way through the first half. The reigning Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Rookie of the Year, potted her first of the season at the 21:17 mark of the first half, for what would stand as the eventual game-winning goal.

Endicott would double their lead in the 76th minute of play when Morgan Hubert (Southington, Conn.) also scored her first of the season. Her strike came at the 75:04 mark, which would conclude the scoring for the match.

The Gulls finished with a 22-3 edge in shots, and a 12-1 edge in shots on goal. Endicott also finished the match with a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • This was the second meeting all-time between the two programs, as the two teams had previously played on November 10, 2007, in the NCAA DIII Tournament. That night, the Gulls came away with a 2-1 win to advance to the second round.
  • Ruggiero has now allowed two goals over 405 minutes of play, good for a 0.44 goals against average.
  • The Gulls have now allowed just three goals through five matches on the season, out-scoring opponents 11-3 to date.
  • Hubert's goal is the second of her career, as she finished her freshman campaign with one goal and two assists in 2021.
