BOSTON, Mass. — First-seeded Endicott fell to second-seeded Nichols, 2-1, in the Conference of New England (CNE) Semifinals on Saturday evening at Wentworth (Carr Diamond).
WP (22-5): Chelsea Indyk (Easthampton, Mass.) — 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
LP (9-4): Kristen Beebe (Brentwood, N.H.) — 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, the Gulls took advantage of a two-out throwing error by Nichols to plate the tying run.
Chloe Shapleigh (Lynnfield, Mass.) worked a leadoff walk to jump-start the offense before she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Elyse Saccoccio (Coventry, R.I.).
Caroline Cummings (Trumbull, Conn.) pinch ran for Shapleigh and came around to score from second base later in the frame despite a Paige Berdos (Plainville, Mass.) single to left field that preceded a strikeout and the throwing error.
Nichols answered right back in the bottom half with a leadoff homer to left center, and Indyk stymied the Gulls the rest of the way (5th — runner on 1st, 1 out | 6th — runners on 1st/2nd, 1 out | 7th — 1,2,3 inning).
Jaylin Couto (Taunton, Mass.) matched Indyk in relief, throwing three scoreless frames (1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) to give Endicott's offense a chance to complete a comeback.
