Softball Splits With UNE, 5-2 & 1-6

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott softball team split a pair of games against the University of New England (UNE), 5-2 and 1-6, in conference action on Saturday evening.

GAME ONE: Endicott 5, UNE 2

WP (7-2): Maria Hanchuk (South Windsor, Conn.) – 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 14 K
LP (2-4): Kate Wilmot (Walpole, Mass.) – 1/3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Gulls exploded for four runs to take game one.

Chloe Shapleigh (Lynnfield, Mass.), Carly Marchitto (Orange, Conn.), and Caitlyn Romero (Southport, Conn.) all drove in runs, while Marchitto also scored on a wild pitch to account for the scoring.

Hanchuk proceeded to set the Nor'easters down in order in the seventh sealing the win for the Gulls.

Hanchuk finished with a career-high 14 strikeouts falling one shy of tying the program record held by Endicott Hall of Famer Robyn Savitske Crosby '07 who accomplished the feat twice during her storied career (4/17/05, 5/20/06).

GAME TWO: UNE 6, Endicott 1

WP (6-5): Jordan Strum (Somersworth, N.H.) – 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
LP (5-2): Jaylin Couto (Taunton, Mass.) – 6 2/3 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 9 K

After a two-hour and 41-minute rain delay, Endicott finally evened up the contest at 1-1 in the fifth inning via an RBI double by Emma DaSilva (Bristol, R.I.).

UNE answered back in the seventh, however, with an RBI single and a grand slam to salvage the split against the Gulls.
