Softball Splits On Opening Day

LEESBURG, Fla. — The Endicott softball team split a pair of games against Plattsburgh (6-0) and Wisconsin-La Crosse (0-8, six innings) to open up its 2022 season on Sunday evening.

GAME ONE: Endicott 6, Plattsburgh 0

WP (1-0): Maria Hanchuk (South Windsor, Conn.) — 7 IP, 0 R, 2 BB, 10 K
LP (0-1): Julia Golino (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) — 6 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 9 K

Hanchuk dazzled in her 2022 debut taking a perfect game into the fifth inning.

She eventually lost her no-hit bid in the sixth on a bloop single down the right field and allowed just two hard-hit balls in the entire contest (two lineouts in the seventh). Overall in the matchup, the Cardinals only saw two runners reach scoring position, one in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, and both with two outs.

Offensively, Keelin Spencer (San Jose, Calif.) sparked the team with a leadoff homer to deep center field in Endicott's three-run first inning.

She also capped the Gulls' scoring in the sixth with a run-scoring triple to right-center.

Chrissy Marotto (Southington, Conn.) also finished the day with a pair of RBI, while Caitlyn Romero (Southport, Conn.) collected her first career hit and RBI via a pinch-hit single to left-center in the sixth.

GAME TWO: Wisconsin-La Crosse 8, Endicott 0 (six innings)

WP (2-1): Elise Weinzierl (St. Michael, Minn.) — 6 IP, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
LP (0-1): Molly O'Neill (Shrewsbury, Mass.) — 2 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

The Eagles hit four home runs to power their way past the Gulls.

Paige Berdos (Plainville, Mass.), Lauren Bower (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), and Raven Comtois (Milford, N.H.) all picked up hits (all singles) in the loss.

Lauren Misiaszek (Londonderry, N.H.) also made a highlight reel catch on a line drive in the right-center gap in the bottom of the first inning (can be watched in the highlights).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORES

  • Berdos notched her first collegiate hit (double) and run in game one.
  • Taylor Chelak (Westborough, Mass.) made her collegiate start in the season opener.
  • Dani Lear (Groveland, Mass.) played in her first collegiate contest in game two.
  • Played Plattsburgh and Wisconsin-La Crosse for the first time ever in program history.
