Sophomore Outside Hitter Justin Kegebein (9)

When it comes to the Endicott College men’s volleyball team, unselfish play and contagious energy are two guarantees on the court. A key part of the group’s success has been Justin Kegebein, who’s in the midst of his third season with the Gulls.

The junior is a native of Liverpool, N.Y. Despite the rather inconvenient commute, he’s made good use of his time in Beverly. Moving forward with a Sports Management major, his decision to be a Gull becomes more justified by the day.

“Playing volleyball here, meeting the people I’ve met, and the confidence I have in being successful with a future degree from Endicott are just a few of the reasons why I’ll forever be grateful I chose to be a student-athlete here,” said Kegebein.

Someone who played a major part in Kegebein becoming a Gull was his head coach, George Chapell. Prior to his commitment decision, Chapell provided him with everything he would need to know.

Three years later, “Keg” is beyond appreciative of everything Chapell and his assistants Rescot, Breen, and Healy have been in helping him grow as a player and person.

“Coach Chapell has been amazing to me personally off the court,” said Kegebein. “Dealing with family issues as of late, I know I can always count on him shooting me a text or calling to check in- genuinely caring for all of his players like sons.”

This season has been a drastic change for a solid portion of the roster. Seven seniors became graduates last season, and due to an injury-plagued sophomore season, the coaching staff has helped Kegebein with a position change from an outside hitter to libero.

In spite of the changes, the club has responded with persistence, not panic. Even after losing their first contest, the team is 7-2 thus far. On top of that, their 4-0 home record has satisfied the Gull faithful beyond belief.

“Everyone’s been working their tails off and pushing each other to get better every day,” said Kegebein.

Kegebein and the rest of his Gull teammates have now won five consecutive matches. The Blue and Green will travel to Dean College this Saturday, February 15th to take on the Bulldogs at 3:00 p.m.
