Gulls top JWU, fall to Hunter in tri-match

Providence, R.I. – Endicott College posted a 3-0 win over Johnson & Wales University before falling to Hunter College, 3-2, in a JWU hosted non-conference tri-match on Saturday afternoon in Providence, R.I. The split advances the Gulls’ record to 22-6 overall on the season, which ties the program record for wins in a season.

In the first match of the day Endicott posted a 3-0 victory over Johnson & Wales, sweeping in scores of 30-19, 30-12 and 30-22. Endicott senior \#A.J. Witkofsky\# (Scotia, N.Y.) led the way with 15 kills, seven digs and five blocks while senior \#Ben Foster\# (Penfield, N.H.) had 44 set assists in the win for the Gulls. Johnson & Wales was led by sophomore Tim Haley (West Warwick, R.I.) with four kills and two digs while sophomore Robert Slough (Buffalo, N.Y.) added eight digs, four blocks and two kills for the Wildcats.

The second match of the day proved to be a thrilling one as Hunter took the 3-2 win over Endicott. Endicott took the 1-0 lead with a 30-26 victory in game one and extended their lead to 2-0 with a 30-22 win. Hunter responded, however, and posted 30-24 and 30-26 victories to force a deciding game five. In that game, both teams battled back and forth with neither holding more than a two point advantage before Hunter took the game 22-20 en route to the 3-2 victory. Sophomore Eric Barty (Jamaica, N.Y.) led the way for Hunter with 25 kills, nine digs and four blocks while senior Zacarias Ripoll-Cid (Puerto Planta, D.R.) had 62 set assists in the win. Junior Christopher Newcomb (Waimea, Hawaii) added 19 kills and 16 digs for a double-double for the Hawks. 

Endicott's \#Ben Foster\# set a school record against Hunter, as the senior dished out 73 assists in the five-set thriller. Foster also surpassed the 5,000 career assist mark and now has 5,104.

The day wrapped up with a commanding 3-0 win for Hunter over host Johnson & Wales, winning by scores of 30-19, 30-13 and 30-20. Freshman Braien Otsla (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way for Hunter with 12 kills, six digs and five blocks while Ripoll-Cid added 24 set assists, 14 digs and eight kills in the victory. Slough and sophomore Mark Garlock (East Greenwich, R.I.) each had six kills for Johnson & Wales in the loss

Johnson & Wales is now 8-17 overall while Endicott is 22-6. Hunter improves to 22-9 with the two victories.
