Box Score - Game 2 - Endicott vs. Eastern Nazarene
BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott College posted a pair of one-run wins over Eastern Nazarene in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference baseball doubleheader played on Monday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. Endicott (13-7 overall, 7-1 TCCC) improved its homestand record to 8-1 and will conclude its 10 in a row at home on Tuesday against the University of Southern Maine.
In game one, both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings before Eastern Nazarene broke through in the top of the third. Joe Steinwedell (La Jolla, Calif.) doubled into the right-center gap to lead off the inning and came around to score on an RBI single by Victor Torres (Bronx, N.Y.) one batter later. The Lions eventually had runners on the corners but \#Nick Kelley\# (Malden, Mass.) struck out Danny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) and forced a Justin Denbow (Readfield, Maine) flyout to end the inning.
Lions’ starter Jared Daniels (Smithsburg, Md.) held the Blue and Green hitless through the first three innings of play before \#Chris Dominguez\# (Braintree, Mass.) doubled down the left field line to break up the perfect game. Dominguez would come around to score on an \#Aaron Santos\# (Cambridge, Mass.) RBI single to knot the game at 1-1.
Endicott took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth as Dominguez greeted new pitcher Gregg Olsen (San Diego, Calif.) with a single and scored the go ahead run on an RBI double by \#Ralph Fidaleo\# (Fairfield, Conn.). \#Nick Kelley\# retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to record his second win of the season and give Endicott the 2-1 victory.
The Gulls only mustered four hits off of Eastern Nazarene pitching with Dominguez going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Fidaleo and Santos each had a hit and an RBI apiece. \#Nick Kelley\# improved to 2-1 while striking out eight and giving up seven hits with one earned run.
Eastern Nazarene was led by 2-for-3 days from Joel Torres (Bronx, N.Y.) and Joe Steinwedell. Victor Torres, Danny Rodriguez and Luke Matthews (Boise, Idaho) also had hits for the Lions. ENC starter Jared Daniels went 5.1 innings, giving up only two hits and one earned run in the no-decision. Gregg Olsen suffered the setback for the Lions going 0.2 innings, giving up two hits and one earned run.
A see-saw affair in game two eventually gave way to another one-run win for the hosts. The Gulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings of play after a bunt single by \#Aaron Santos\# scored \#Eric Lemke\# (Southington, Conn.) in the bottom of the first, followed by a pair of RBI singles in the second inning from \#Andrew Betts\# (Bristol, Conn.) and Lemke.
The Lions got all three runs back with one swing of the bat, however, as Joel Torres (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a three-run homerun off the rock façade in left field to tie the game at 3-all.
The Gulls manufactured a pair of runs in the fourth inning as the Blue and Green dropped the squeeze play to plate \#Mike Russo\# (Natick, Mass.), and \#Chris Dominguez\# connected on a sacrifice fly to right field to score catcher \#Joe Klein\# (Monroe, Conn.).
The Lions showed patience at the plate in the top of the fifth as ENC was once again able to tie the score after working four straight walks that plated two runs. Matt Sharon (Wallingford, Vt.) came out of the bullpen to strikeout Steinwedell looking to retire the side.
Endicott scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning off a throwing error by Lions’ third baseman Joe Steinwedell. The senior gathered a two-out chopper at third base and threw low and away across the diamond, allowing \#Aaron Santos\# to score from second.
ENC threatened twice before all was said and done. Endicott escaped the sixth inning as \#Joe Klein\# gunned down Joel Torres on an attempted steal to second to get out of the inning. The Lions’ Luke Matthews (Boise, Idaho) then hit a two-out ground-rule double to right field in the top of the seventh, putting the tying run in scoring position. Sharon was able to induce a Jonathan Ovalles (Bronx, N.Y.) pop out to second to end the game.
\#Eric Lemke\# went 3-for-3 in game two with two RBI and a run scored. Santos also was a perfect 3-for-3, scoring once and driving in a run. Endicott has 11 hits in the 6-5 victory.
Eastern Nazarene scored five runs on just three hits, with Joel Torres leading the way with three RBI and two runs scored. Luke Matthews had the two other Lion hits in the setback.
\#Matt Sharon\# picked up his second win of the season, pitching 2.1 innings while allowing just one hit, no runs and struck out two. Steve Oehlschlager (Dallas, Texas) fell to 2-2 on the year, surrendering six runs (five earned) on 11 hits.
Endicott completes its 10-game homestand on Tuesday when the Gulls host the University of Southern Maine for one nine-inning game beginning at 3:30 p.m. ENC returns to work on Tuesday with a TCCC doubleheader against Western New England College at 2:00 p.m.
