Endicott Rallies to Defeat MIT, 3-2

BEVERLY, Mass. - The Endicott women's volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat regional power MIT on Tuesday night by a 3-2 final. After dropping the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 26-24, the Gulls then took the next three by scores of 25-23, 25-13 and 15-9.

Endicott offense came to life after the Gulls dropped a close second set 26-24, as the Gulls would out-hit the Engineers .234 to .106 over the final three sets. Leading the way was junior opposite Meghan Frederick (Sunapee, N.H.) who finished with 11 kills and six blocks. Joining her with six blocks was junior Nicole Winkler (Southborough, Mass.), while Lauren McGrath (Franklin, Mass.), Mackenzie Kennedy (Andover, Mass.), and Remi Quesnelle (Sunderland, Mass.) all finished with double-digit dig totals. McGrath led all Gulls with 19, while Kennedy finished with 17 and Quesnelle with 12. 

Quesnelle completed the double-double by tacking on 10 kills, while Amanda Gilbert (Hopkinton, Mass.) led Endicott with 14 kills. Zoey Gifford (Natick, Mass.) posted 44 assists, six digs and five kills in the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • This was Endicott first win over MIT since 2013, and second win all-time against the Engineers.
  • Frederick saved her best for last, posting a 7-0-9 (.778) line in the fifth set.
  • Endicott held the edge in hitting percentage (.154 to .126), assists (53 to 49), aces (12 to 9), and digs (77 to 75).
  • The Gulls held the Engineers negative in the pivotal fourth set, as the visitors hit -.031 (8-9-32).

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (3-0) heads south to Rome, Ga. to compete in the Berry National Invitational. On Friday, the Gulls will take on Mary Hardin-Baylor and Rhodes, before taking on Christopher Newport and Berry on Saturday. MIT travels to Colorado to compete in the Colorado College Spike it Up Classic against LeTourneau and Willamette on Friday.
