BOSTON, Mass. - The Endicott women's volleyball team handed Wentworth its first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) loss on Tuesday night, courtesy of a 3-0 sweep. Now 17-10 overall and 6-1 in CCC play, Endicott plays host to Curry on Saturday to wrap up the regular season, while Wentworth, now 21-3 (7-1 CCC), plays a pair of non-conference foes to end the regular season.
The Gulls' biggest margin of victory came in the first set when they won by a 25-19 final. The next two sets would tighten up, as Endicott claimed both by 25-22 finals. The third set saw both teams tied at 22, but Endicott would finish on a 3-0 run to finish the sweep.
Leading the way offensively for Endicott was junior Alex Dippel (Fallston, Md.) who finished with 13 kills and eight digs. The 13 kills were her fourth-highest output of the season, while her eight digs matched a season-high. Freshman Colleen McAvoy (Coventry, Conn.) finished with a .615 average, posting eight kills on 13 error-free swings. The middle tied for the team-high with three blocks with fellow middle Nicole Winkler (Southborough, Mass.), who also added seven kills on a .385 average.
Setter Zoey Gifford (Natick, Mass.) finished with an astounding 38 assists in the sweep, picking up 13 digs for her 14th double-double of the year. She led the Endicott offense to hit at a .202 clip, while her defense helped to hold the Leopards to a .148 average. Leading that defensive effort for the Gulls was libero Mackenzie Kennedy (Andover, Mass.) who led all players with 19 digs. Also contributing significantly to Endicott's 71-60 edge in digs were Amanda Gilbert (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Nichole Trudon (Coventry, Conn.), who finished with 10 and 9, respectively.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Endicott and Wentworth are now tied atop the CCC standings, with Roger Williams and Salve Regina close behind, each with a 5-2 record.
- The Gulls saw five players record six kills or more on the night, compared to two for the Leopards.
WHAT'S NEXT
Endicott will wrap up the regular season when they play host to CCC foe Curry on Saturday at 1:00 PM. Wentworth travels to Fitchburg St. for a non-conference tri-match with Fitchburg and Worcester St.
