BEVERLY, Mass.- The Endicott women's volleyball team used a strong offensive performance to sweep cross-town rivals Gordon 3-0 on Tuesday night. With the win, Endicott improves to 14-9 overall and 5-0 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play while Gordon falls to 11-9 and 4-2 in CCC play.
Endicott started strong, taking the first set 25-16 behind a stifling defensive effort. The Gulls were able to hold the Fighting Scots to a negative hitting percentage as a team, -.100 (7-11-40), while recording 11 kills on the offensive end. The second set saw a closer afair as the Gordon offense starting to click with the visitors hitting .258 as a team. It was Endicott's offense however that was a force in the second as the Gulls hit an astounding .433 (17-4-30) in the set to claim a 25-19 win. The third would see Endicott fall behind 10-5 early before the offense clicked again. The Gulls hit at a .324 clip in the set that saw the home team make a 20-8 run to claim the third 25-18 and the match, 3-0.
The Gulls were led on the night by senior Tori McIntyre (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Lauren Sheehan (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) as the duo combined for 29 kills while hitting .418 on the night. McIntyre was dominant on both sides of the ball, posting a match high 17 kills (17-4-31, .419) to go with 12 digs and two aces. Sheehan was equally as impressive offensively, notching 12 kills (12-2-24, .417) on the evening.
BEYOND THE BOX
McIntyre, the reigning CCC Player of the Week, posted her ninth double-double performance of the season, and third in as many matches.
Senior libero Erika Trudon (Coventry, Conn.), the reigning CCC Defensive Player of the Week, led all players with 14 digs in the win as she led a dominant defensive effort for the home squad. Joining Trudon and McIntyre with a strong defensive effort was sophomore Cydney Pierce (Carpinteria, Calif.) with nine digs.
Setter Mareena Clotfelter (Poulsbo, Wash.) shined on Tuesday, logging 37 assists in the three set win to go with seven digs.
Middles Emily Diezemann (Peabody, Mass.) and Erica Hadad (Salem, N.H.) combined to post seven kills on 16 swings and three assist blocks.
FOR THE FOES
The Scots were led offensively by Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.) who claimed 10 kills on 38 swings to go with 10 digs.
Setter Renee Cooprider (Hopkinton, Mass.) recorded 25 assists and 10 digs in the effort.
Libero Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) collected seven digs to go with a team-best two service aces.
WHAT'S NEXT
Endicott will play host to Wesleyan on Friday at 5:00 p.m. in the opening round of the Wellesley Invitational. This will also serve as the women's Senior Night as the Gulls celebrate the careers of McIntyre, Trudon, Jayla Brennen (Litchfield, N.H.), Dana Ferraro (Brookfield, Conn.) and Rasa Hamel (Clinton, Conn.). Endicott will then travel to Wellesley to take on the hosts and Ithaca on Saturday. Gordon travels to Medford, Mass. to take on a pair of NESCAC foes in Colby and Tufts on Saturday.
