Jeremy Howard Steps Down As Men’s & Women’s Tennis Head Coach At Endicott

Jeremy Howard talks to his team in a circle.

BEVERLY, Mass. — Endicott College men's and women's tennis head coach Jeremy Howard has stepped down from both positions following six-plus seasons at the helm of each program. The announcement was made this morning by Endicott College Assistant Vice President, Director of Athletics Dr. Brian Wylie

"I am so thankful for everything about my time here at Endicott. From the moment I stepped onto campus in August of 2012 until now, the experience has been phenomenal," said Howard. "The support of the administration, the camaraderie among the coaching staff, and, finally, the work ethic of the student-athletes is only a fraction of what makes this place so special. The decision to leave Endicott was incredibly difficult in light of all the personal relationships I've developed here, but it was a decision I ultimately had to make."

During his time at Endicott, which also included secondary duties as academic liaison to the entire athletics department, Howard amassed a 163-78 overall record (.676), combined, between both programs. Howard is the winningest head coach in both men's and women's tennis program history, both in total wins and winning percentage (min. 35 matches).

"Coach Howard arrived at Endicott at a time when the men's and women's tennis programs needed strong leadership and attention, and that's exactly what he did," said Wylie. "His recruitment of quality men and women, and vision for a successful program in the classroom and on the courts have created an enviable culture within our department and beyond within the conference. We are grateful and wish him luck as he moves to the next chapter of his journey."

On the women's side, Howard compiled a 96-30 overall record (.762) and a 50-5 mark (.909) in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. Howard led the Gulls to four CCC Championships (2012-15), seven CCC Championship appearances (2012-18), four NCAA Division III Tournament Appearances (2012-15) and three NCAA Division III Tournament second round appearances (2013-15).

Howard, who was named the CCC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year four times, also coached 29 All-CCC Singles student-athletes, 16 All-CCC Doubles Teams, three CCC Players of the Year, two CCC Rookies of the Year, two CCC Senior Scholar-Athletes, 35 CCC Academic All-Conference honorees, five Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Teams (2014-18), and 39 ITA All-Academic award winners.

Along with those accolades, Howard's 2012-13 team holds the program record for most wins in a season at 19 total and will forever hold the distinction as the first team in program history to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Meanwhile, on the men's side, Howard produced a 67-48 overall record (.583) and a 33-15 mark (.688) in conference play. Howard guided the Gulls to six CCC playoff appearances, including five trips to the semifinals (2013-16, 2018). Both figures - overall playoff appearances and semifinals appearances - are the most under any coach in program history. Howard also is the only coach in program history to lead the program to five double-digit win seasons. Lastly, his 2015-16 squad tied the program record for wins with 12 total (12-8).

In addition to those merits, Howard coached 20 All-CCC Singles student-athletes, eight All-CCC Doubles Teams, and two CCC Rookies of the Year. Academically, 21 student-athletes earned CCC Academic All-Conference honors under Howard's watch, while one of his squads earned ITA All-Academic Team accolades (2014) and nine of his student-athletes received ITA All-Academic accolades.

A search for a new men's and women's tennis head coach will begin immediately.
