Women’s Tennis Edges Wheaton (Mass.), 5-4

NORTON, Mass. – The Endicott women's tennis team earned a hard fought 5-4 win over Wheaton (Mass.) on Wednesday evening at the Clark Tennis Courts.

Gillian Freter (Scituate, Mass.) clinched the victory for the Gulls with a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 3 singles as Endicott led by a 4-3 score at the time. Maxine Bergstein (Hingham, Mass.) was also pivotal to the outcome of match as her No. 4 singles win (4-6, 6-2, 10-7) broke up a 3-3 tie.

"That was a gritty 5-4 win over a solid team," said Endicott women's tennis head coach Jeremy Howard. "Match of the day certainly goes to Margot [Andreasen] and Mackenzie [Rhodes] at No. 2 doubles. It was their first time ever playing together and they came back from a 7-4 deficit to win 9-7."

  • Jamie Zompa (Marlborough, Mass.) and Alexandra Barmore (Southington, Conn.) picked up an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles before Zompa eventually registered a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles to aid the Gulls in their 5-4 triumph.
  • Freter is 9-1 overall in singles play this season, and leads the team in wins.
  • Freter is 4-0 at the No. 3 and No. 5 spots, 1-0 at No. 4, and 0-1 at No. 6.
  • Zompa and Barmore are 5-1 this year as a doubles pairing (2-0 at No.2, 3-1 at No. 3).

Endicott (9-3) travels to Bridgewater State University on Monday, October 10 for a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m. Wheaton (3-5) visits Clark University this Saturday for a league contest at 1 p.m.
