Women's Tennis Opens 2014-15 Season with Shutout Victory

BEVERLY, Mass. - In their first match of the 2014-15 season, the Endicott women's team handed non-conference rival Colby-Sawyer a 9-0 loss on their own courts as the Gulls won their fourth consecutive season opener over the Chargers on Friday afternoon. The lineup featured five of Endicott's regular starters over the past two seasons with freshman Dayna Reilly (Swansea, Mass.) making her collegiate debut at #1 doubles and #3 singles and freshman Maxine Bergstein (Hingham, Mass.) also contributing at #3 doubles.

Reilly teamed up with senior captain Amy Heacox (Marion, Mass.) to score an 8-4 win at the top doubles flight to help the Blue and Green own a 3-0 lead through doubles play. Bergstein and sophomore Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H.) cleaned up an 8-3 win at #3 doubles while the familiar duo of juniors Suzie Newman (Dighton, Mass.) and Brittany Potter (Bedford, N.H.) battled in their #2 doubles match to an 8-5 triumph.

In singles action, Heacox (#1), Reilly (#3), Newman (#4), and Rhodes (#6) all cruised to straight set wins over their Colby-Sawyer opponents while senior captain Natalie Egbert (Gorham, Mass.) fought to a 7-4 first set tiebreaker to win #2 singles 7-6, 6-1 and Potter grinded out a 10-8 third set to edge her #5 singles opposition 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.

Endicott has not lost a season opener in over a decade but next run into a talented Wellesley squad out of the NEWMAC on Saturday, August 30th. Doubles play begins at 1:00 pm.
