No. 5 Endicott Takes Down No. 4 WNE in CCC Quarterfinals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The fifth-seeded Endicott women's soccer team defeated the fourth-seeded Golden Bears of Western New England 1-0 in the second overtime in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Gulls (10-7-1) now advance to take on top-seeded Gordon on Wednesday at a time that is to be determined.

The lone goal was scored on a penalty after the Golden Bears committed a foul in the box. All-CCC Second Team honoree Jaymie Caponigro (Swampscott, Mass.) took advantage of the opportunity, burying her attempt past the WNE keeper in the 102nd minute to give the Gulls the 1-0 win. The junior led the Endicott attack all day, finishing with match-highs of seven shots five shots on goal.

Endicott held a 20-12 advantage in shots in the match, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Keeper Kayla Wentworth (Taunton, Mass.) made four saves, earning her fifth shutout of the season, and 10th win overall. 

BEYOND THE BOX

  • This will be the 20th time the Gulls have advanced to at least the semifinal round of the CCC Tournament since joining the conference 21 years ago.
  • With the win today, the Gulls have now won 10 matches or more in 13 of the 15 seasons under head coach Jodi Kenyon.
  • Earlier this season, the Gulls knocked off Gordon 1-0 at home, the only loss Gordon would take in regular season CCC play.

WHAT'S NEXT

No. 5 Endicott (10-7-1) advances to take on No. 1 Gordon (13-3-3) on Wednesday in the CCC semifinal round. The start time is still to be determined.
