Caponigro's Late Goal Lifts Endicott to 2-1 Win Over Nichols on Senior Day

BEVERLY, Mass. - The Endicott women's soccer team celebrated a 2-1 win over Nichols on Senior Day after Jaymie Caponigro (Swampscott, Mass.) scored the game-winner with 46.9 seconds remaining in regulation. The win lifts Endicott to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on the season.

Caponigro's goal came after Endicott was awarded a penalty in the 89th minute after a foul for a hand ball was committed in the box. The junior stepped up and buried her opportunity past the Nichols keeper to complete the comeback for the Gulls, who trailed 1-0 at half time. 

The Gulls were celebrating the careers of the nine-person senior class on Saturday that has put up a 43-18-8 record overall to date in their four years at the Nest. The senior class consists of Larissa Cade (Middlefield, Conn.)Madeleine Cheney (Bow, N.H.)Catherine Elkas (Holden, Mass.)Brianna Knight (Andover, Mass.)Elizabeth Masucci (Norwell, Mass.)Hannah Merritt (West Hartford, Conn.)Hannah Pesci (Windham, N.H.)Claire Shields (Loudonville, N.Y.), and Kayla Wentworth (Taunton, Mass.)

Endicott first got on the board in the 71st minute when senior Claire Shields scored her first of the season. Shields was able to possess the ball deep in the box and turned to fire a cross-net shot from just outside the right post. Her shot crossed the frame and stayed inside the left post to even the score at 1-1.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is now 24-3-1 all-time against Nichols dating back to 1994.
  • The Gulls have won 19 straight over the Bison, a streak that started back in 2003. During that stretch, Endicott has out-scored Nichols 59-7.
  • Endicott held a 21-4 advantage in shots during the match, including the 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.

WHAT'S NEXT

Both teams will continue with CCC play next week as Endicott (8-5, 3-1 CCC) travels to Roger Williams on Wednesday for a 7:00 PM start, while Nichols (10-4, 1-3 CCC) plays host to Wentworth on Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
