BEVERLY, Mass. - The Endicott women's soccer team came up short in their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) semifinal match against Western New England (WNE), as the Golden Bears advanced to the championship after a 0-0 draw, via penalty kicks with a 4-3 advantage.
The top seeded Gulls and fourth seeded Golden Bears played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer through two halves and two 10 minute overtime periods before the teams advanced to penalty kicks. Endicott held a 3-2 edge after three rounds for both teams before the Golden Bears came back to make their last two for the 4-3 advantage.
Statistically, Endicott out-shot Western New England 33-2 on the night, which included an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. Western New England keeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) would make all eight saves, while Kayla Wentworth (Taunton, Mass.) made one.
Catherine Elkas (Holden, Mass.) led all players with eight shots, four of which were on goal.
BEYOND THE BOX
- Endicott's senior class of Delaney Caggiano (Bristol, Conn.), Sharlotte Pernice (West Springfield, Mass.) and Mary Verneris (Hamden, Conn.), finish their careers with an overall record of 44-21-11, and a record of 26-7-3 in CCC play. The women made four straight trips to the CCC semifinals.
WHAT'S NEXT
Western New England, now 8-7-5 overall, advances to the CCC Championship as they travel to No. 3 seeded UNE who upset No. 2 Gordon 1-0. With the setback, Endicott, now 9-4-5 overall, ends their 2018 campaign.
