BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott women's soccer team turned in a 3-1 conference victory over the University of New England (UNE) on Wednesday evening at Hempstead Stadium.
Deadlocked at 1-1 in the second half, Endicott junior midfielder Madeleine Cheney (Bow, N.H.) broke up the tie with her fourth goal of the season (65:32) just 1:48 after the Nor'easters found the equalizer in the contest (63:44)
Cheney scored the eventual game-winner (fourth of the season, fourth of her career at Endicott) when she gathered a failed clear in the box. The clear of a cross glanced off the cross and rebounded straight to Cheney who was able to put it in to give Endicott the 2-1 edge.
Meanwhile, in the 81st minute, Catherine Elkas (Holden, Mass.) added the insurance goal for the Gulls when she split a pair of defenders and beat UNE's goalkeeper via a one-on-one situation.
In goal, Kayla Wentworth (Taunton, Mass.) improved to 8-4-4 on the year with two saves. One of the saves was a highlight save that came towards the end of the first half. With just over seven minutes left on the clock, Wentworth made a diving stop and pushed the shot off the cross to keep the score 1-0 in favor of the Gulls.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Endicott extended its winning streak to four straight games.
- Jillian Presser (Trumbull, Conn.) notched her second goal of the season at 29:19 on a one-timer off a pass from Gabriella Prisco (West Haven, Conn.). Presser has now scored twice in conference play this season.
- Cheney pushed her goal scoring streak to three straight games dating, which dates back to October 13.
- UNE is 2-4-1 on the road this year.
- The Gulls are 16-10-1 all-time versus the Nor'easters. Endicott also has won three in a row against UNE.
WHAT'S NEXT
Endicott (8-4-4, 5-1-1 CCC) hosts Curry College this Saturday at 2:30 PM. Prior to the match, seniors Delaney Caggiano (Bristol, Conn.), Sharlotte Pernice (West Springfield, Mass.), and Mary Verneris (Hamden, Conn.) will be honored for their contributions towards the program and the Endicott community in a Senior Day ceremony.
UNE (6-7-1, 4-2-0 CCC) visits Western New England this Saturday at 2:30 PM.
