Cheney Nets OT Winner as Gulls Knock off Leopards 1-0

BOSTON, Mass. - The Endicott women's soccer team traveled to Wentworth on Saturday afternoon and returned home with a 1-0 overtime win as Madeleine Cheney (Bow, N.H.) scored just over two minutes into the extra frame.

With the win, Endicott improves to 6-4-4 overall and 4-1-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play, while Wentworth falls to 6-7-2 and 1-3-1 in CCC action.

Early in the first overtime, Endicott was awarded a corner kick which Samantha Lello (Shelton, Conn.) stepped up to take. Her corner was able to connect with the head of Cheney as the junior midfielder flicked a header on goal that rolled past the Wentworth keeper and in for the game-winner at the 92:16 mark. It was Cheney's first game-winner for the Gulls, who now sit tied atop the CCC standings with Western New England for first place in the conference.

Overall, the Gulls dominated the match defensively, limiting the Leopard to just four total shots in the match, only one of which was on goal. In comparison, Endicott registered 23 shots in the competition, 11 of which were on frame. Keeper Kayla Wentworth (Taunton, Mass.) was able to make the one save to earn her fifth shutout of the season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Cheney and Jillian Presser (Trumbull, Conn.) finished tied for the match-high with three shots on goal as Cheney attempted five shots total, while Presser took four. 
  • Endicott is now 21-6-1 all-time against Wentworth dating back to 1998.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott will travel to North Shore rival Salem St. on Monday for a 7:00 PM start. Wentworth hosts CCC foe Salve Regina on Tuesday for a 4:00 PM start.
