BEVERLY, Mass. – Director of Athletics, Dr. Brian Wylie, has formally announced the appointment of Maureen Spellman to the head women's lacrosse coaching position at Endicott. Spellman becomes the seventh head coach in Endicott women's lacrosse history and takes over a program that is coming off their 10th Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) championship-winning season this past spring.

"We feel that Coach Spellman brings Endicott and the women's lacrosse program a deep appreciation for the academic and athletic balance required of our NCAA Division III student-athletes and leaders," said Wylie. "Her passion, enthusiasm, and focus on developing young women and ensuring they experience the entire Endicott experience resonated during our evaluation process. Moreover, Coach Spellman is committed to elevating and building Endicott women's lacrosse far beyond what we've experienced. She truly embraces what it means to be a Gull."

Spellman began her coaching career after graduating in 2012 from the University of New Haven with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. She joined NCAA Division II's Southern Connecticut State as an assistant coach the following year while also coaching the Nor'easter Lacrosse Club. Spellman took the helm of SCSU's women's lacrosse program in the 2013-14 academic year where she oversaw all aspects of team operations including student-athlete recruitment, scheduling, team operations, and academic success.

During Spellman's tenure at SCSU concluded with 16 student-athletes achieving NE-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for maintaining at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. The entire team earned an IWLCA Team Academic Award for the second consecutive season while three individuals were placed on the IWLCA All-Academic Team.

"I am excited and honored to be joining the Endicott family as the head women's lacrosse coach," said Spellman. "The community atmosphere and supportive athletic department are exactly what I'm looking for in an institution. I am very grateful to Brian Wylie and the rest of the search committee for giving me the opportunity to take the women's lacrosse program to the next level."

Spellman was a four-year goalie and two-time captain New Haven where she holds the program record for career wins (46) and saves (636) as well as numerous single season and individual game highs. Her standout play as a student-athlete from 2009-12 resulted in numerous postseason athletic accolades including three Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-North Region Second Team awards. Additionally, Spellman was a three-time Northeast-10 (NE-10) All-Conference honoree where in 2009, as a freshman, she was named NE-10 Conference Goalie of the Year and Rookie of the Year with a First Team All-Conference nod.

ENDICOTT'S BIGGEST DRAW

"What excites me most about Endicott is its rich tradition of excellence, especially in academics and athletics," said Spellman. "The women's lacrosse program attracts top student-athletes that have a desire to learn and grow in the Division III atmosphere. I'm eager to take the program to its highest potential in the very near future with our eyes set on a NCAA Championship."

GULLS WOMEN'S LACROSSE IN RECENT YEARS

Spellman is taking over an Endicott women's lacrosse program that won the 2017 CCC Championships and qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament with the automatic bid. The Gulls went 14-5 overall and undefeated (8-0) in conference play in previous head coach Morgan Maciewicz' third and final season, saw four student-athletes attain IWLCA All-Pilgrim Region First Team and eight get named to the All-CCC Team including both the Defensive Player and Rookie of the Year. Academically, 11 student-athletes were listed on the CCC Academic All-Conference Team, six of whom were placed on the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.50 cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher.

After winning nine consecutive CCC Championships from 2006-14 and advancing to the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in their final two appearances during that stretch, the Endicott women's lacrosse team became widely regarded as one of the best programs in New England and recognized nationally. In both the 2015 and 2016 seasons, however, Endicott's streak of league dominance came up short in the conference tournament with semifinal and championship game appearances, respectively. Endicott's 2017 CCC Championship-winning season marked the 10th title in program history.
