No. 7 Endicott Defeats UMass Boston, 2-1, In Overtime

BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 7 Endicott women's ice hockey team defeated UMass Boston, 2-1, in overtime during the championship game of the 11th Annual Codfish Bowl this evening.

The first period saw great looks from each team as they both had nine shots, but neither could find the back of the net. 

Endicott and UMass Boston both continued to pressure offensively in the second frame but goaltenders Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) and Rachel Myette (Duxbury, Mass.) were each able to come up with several key saves to keep the score knotted at 0-0. 

With time winding down in the third period, Katie Barry (Abington, Mass.) put the Beacons up 1-0. 

The Gulls, however, responded with a goal from Ellen Carter (Roseville, Minn.) just 22 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1 and send it to overtime.

Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.) delivered the golden goal with 40 seconds left in the first overtime period to lift Endicott to a 2-1 victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Jonsson improved to 6-0-1 on the season and recorded a season-high 38 saves. She was also named the MVP of the tournament for her efforts in net.
  • Lexi Klein (Shoreview, Minn.), Jillian Gibbs (Burlington, Vt. )Jade Meier (Fairbanks, Alaska), and Carter were credited with assists during the contest.
  • Meier led the offense with nine shots, while Klein was close behind with seven.
  • Endicott held the 46-39 shot advantage.
  • This is the first Codfish Bowl title for the Gulls. They also previously played in the Codfish Bowl during the 2015-16 season.

FOR THE FOES

  • Myette made 44 saves in the loss (1-3-2).
  • Edy Moritz (Guilford, Conn.) and Kaitlin Parent (Myersville, Md.) assisted on the Beacons' goal.
  • Jane Ann Drill (Madison, Wis.), Kaleigh Beauregard (Gaylord, Mich.), and Alli Bianchini (Sterling Heights, Mich.) paced the offense with five shots each.

WHAT'S NEXT 

No. 7 Endicott (8-0-1, 5-0-1 CHC) travels to Salve Regina for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday, Dec. 2. UMass Boston (4-3-2, 3-1-2 NEHC) plays at Bowdoin on Friday, Dec. 1 at 4 p.m.
