BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott women's ice hockey team and Wesleyan University skated to a 2-2 overtime tie on Friday night at Raymond J. Bourque Arena in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Trailing 2-0 in the third, the Gulls responded with a pair of goals less than 10 minutes into the period to even the score at 2-2. Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.) put the Gulls within one at the 5:22 mark of the period when she converted a power play goal on a beautiful tick-tack-toe setup from Michaela McNamara (Warwick, R.I.) and Caroline Hughes (Andover, Mass.), while Lexi Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) tied up the contest on a give-and-go feed with Teneal Perry (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada) at 9:48.
Endicott netminder Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) then kept the Cardinals honest for the remainder of the third, and overtime, by stopping five shots down the stretch to clinch the tie for the Gulls.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Klein's tally at 9:48 of the third was her first career game-tying goal in 31 games played for Endicott.
- Layo leads all student-athletes in program history with seven power play goals in 35 career games.
- Jonsson stopped 26 shots in the tie (6-0-1 this season/18-6-5 career).
- Ellen Carter (Roseville, Minn.) blocked a team-high four shots in tonight's contest, and currently leads the team with 17 block shots on the year.
- McNamara tied for the game-high in face-off wins with nine.
FOR THE FOES
- Gina Mangiafridda (Pelham, N.Y.) put the Cardinals on the scoreboard first with her third tally of the season 41-seconds into the second period on feeds from Jess Brennan (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Alex Horton (Great Neck, N.Y.).
- Alexis Banquer (Fairfield, Conn.) made it a 2-0 matchup at 3:13 of the second when she tucked a shot inside the left post on passes from Kendall Carr (York, Maine) and Sam Curran (Scituate, Mass.).
- Sam Smith (Tarentum, Pa.) made 42 saves in the tie (1-1-1).
- Carr blocked a game-high five shots.
- Rachel Aronow (West Hartford, Conn.) tied McNamara for the game-high in face-off wins (9).
- The Cardinals halted their three-game losing streak with tonight's tie.
