BOSTON, Mass. – The Endicott women's ice hockey team fell to Trinity College, 4-1, in its 2016 season opener on the campus of UMass Boston on Monday evening in the second game of the Codfish Bowl at the Beacons Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Trinity scored two goals just 1:27 apart in the second to take a commanding 2-0 lead heading into the final period of action. Kate Fraley (Edina, Minn.) opened the scoring for the Bantams, while Melissa Maffeo (Melrose, Mass.) followed with her third goal of the season to account for the 2-0 gap on the scoreboard.
Chandler Solimine (Pelham, N.Y.) went on to make it a 3-0 margin with her seventh marker of the 2015-16 campaign at 1:45 on a feed by Shelby Labe (Pine Brook, N.J.) before Endicott's Lexi Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) broke up the shutout with her third tally this season at the 11:14 mark.
Emma Tani (Orange, Calif.) added an empty net, shorthanded goal for the Bantams with one second to play to close out the scoring in the non-conference matchup.
Trinity sophomore netminder Sydney Belinskas (Port Orange, Fla.) stopped 21 shots to improve to 2-4-0, while Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) made 20 saves in the loss (4-3-2).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Today's game was the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The two squads will also play against each other once more this season on Saturday, January 23 in Beverly, Mass. at Raymond J. Bourque Arena.
- Linnéa Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) and Dynnea Bezona (Fairbanks, Alaska) both picked up assists on Klein's goal in the third period. L. Jonsson now has two assists on the year, while Bezona picked up her first collegiate helper on the tally.
- Endicott went 28-for-48 at the face-off dot, and the Gulls also saw four student-athletes win five or more faceoffs despite the loss.
- Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.) led the team with eight faceoff wins.
FOR THE FOES
- Caroline Howell (Lyme, N.H.), Cheeky Herr (Princeton, N.J.), and Labe all were credited with assists in the win.
- Trinity is 2-1 overall in its last three games played.
- Today's win for the Bantams was their first neutral site victory this season.
