BEVERLY, Mass. – In a matchup of unbeaten teams on Friday night, the Stevenson women's ice hockey team produced a 2-0 victory over Endicott in a Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) contest at Raymond J. Bourque Arena. Both teams entered play with identical 6-0-0, 4-0-0 (CHC) records.
Mustangs' senior right winger Jessie Capanelli (Lancaster, Pa.) put the guests on the scoreboard just 1:48 into the game with a quick shot in front of the crease that beat Endicott freshman goaltender Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) for her sixth goal of the season.
Stevenson added to the lead late in the first period as Katie Abbott (Royal Oak, Mich.) one-timed a deflection near the right post after the puck ricocheted off of Chelsea Blackburn's (Westland, Mich.) stick at the doorstep of the crease.
Sarah Modzelewski (Brighton, Mich.) turned away 27 shots – including several quality scoring chances by the Gulls – to secure the win for the Mustangs.
Despite the pair of first period goals, Jonsson was impressive in net for Endicott as the freshman goaltender notched 20 saves (7-1st, 4-2nd, 9-3rd) in the loss. (4-1-0).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Jonsson entered tonight's contest having not allowed a goal over her first 239:52 of action in net for the Gulls. Her scoreless streak ended at 241:40.
- Freshman Meredith Vlachos (East Bridgewater, Mass.) won a team-high ten face-offs.
- The Gulls were 26-for-40 at the face-off dot.
- Freshman Courtney Walpole (Allen, Texas) paced the team in shots with four total.
FOR THE FOES
- Megan Alexander (Redono Beach, Calif.), and Brooke Webber (Pittsburgh, Va.) picked up assists on Capanelli's tally, while Blackburn and Monica Pozuc (Kent, Ohio) registered helpers on Abbott's goal.
- Pozuc now has five assists on the season.
- Blackburn paced the Mustangs with six face-off wins.
- The Mustangs are one of four teams in Division III to have not allowed a power play goal.
