HARRISVILLE, R.I. – In its first-ever game as a NCAA Division III varsity program, the Endicott women's ice hockey team turned in an 2-0 victory over Plymouth State University on Friday evening at Levy Rink.
Freshman forward Lexi Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) gave the Gulls a 1-0 lead at the 11:11 mark of the first period after sliding a puck between the legs of a Panthers' defenseman and burying a wrist shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Endicott proceeded to add to its advantage in the second (10:56) as freshman defenseman Ellen Carter (Roseville, Minn.) fired a shot past Plymouth State goaltender Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, Conn.) into the back of the net for a 2-0 gap.
Defensively, the Gulls blocked 11 shots throughout the entire game to aid freshman goaltender Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) in recording the first-ever shutout in program history. Jonsson finished the contest with 17 saves, including a game-high seven stops in the opening period (2P-4/3P-6).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Klein can forever hold claim to scoring the first-ever goal in program history for the Gulls.
- Klein also led the team in shots with six total (1P-3, 2P-3, 3P-0).
- Freshman defenseman Holly Erbe (Woodbine, Md.) was credited with an assist on Klein's goal.
- Endicott outshot Plymouth State, 27-17.
- Freshman Teneal Perry (Hebron, Maine) went a perfect 7-0 in the face-off circle.
- Classmate Meredith Vlachos (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was 7-for-8 in faceoffs.
- As a team, the Gulls were 25-for-34 at the face-off dot.
- Both teams went a combined 0-for-7 on power play attempts in the game.
- Endicott was on the power play for 7:58 of action, while Plymouth State held an extra-man advantage for 2:57.
FOR THE FOES
- Altschuler compiled 25 saves in the loss (0-1-0).
- Freshman forward Taylor Jackson (St. Albans, Vt.) and junior defenseman Haley Branovan (Canandaigua, N.Y.) tied for the team-lead in shots with three apiece.
- Freshman forward Kelsey Roy (Ft. Collins, Ohio) won six faceoffs for the Panthers.
