Coast Guard Tops Women's Basketball, 62-59

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Endicott women's basketball team stormed back in the second half but came up short, 62-59, against Coast Guard Saturday afternoon at Roland Hall.

Emma Shinney (Wakefield, Mass.) led the charge on offense posting a double-double, shooting nine-for-18 from the field with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The sophomore guard also dished out five assists and swiped two steals on the afternoon.

Sarah Dempsey (Windham, N.H.) added 15 points (7-12 FG, 1-2 3PT), six rebounds, and two takeaways in her 38 minutes on the floor.

The Gulls soared out to a quick 6-0 lead via a pair of three-pointers in the first two minutes. The hosts responded with an 8-0 burst of their own. Shinny led Endicott scoring seven consecutive points to keep the Gulls within a possession (18-15) heading into the second quarter. Tenley Wallin (Danbury, Conn.) netted a three-pointer to cut the deficit to four points (26-22) with 3:27 left in the second period. However, the Bears closed out the first half on an 11-2 run to give themselves a 37-24 lead entering the halftime break.

The Gulls gained momentum out of the locker room via an Avery Brown (Canton, Conn.) three-pointer followed by a Shinney layup capped off an 11-0 run for Endicott, who held Coast Guard scoreless for over seven minutes. The two teams traded buckets in the final minutes as the Gulls cut the lead to three (45-42) entering the final quarter.

A pair of Cora Nadeau (Newport, Vt.) three-pointers on consecutive possessions kept the Blue and Green within a point (60-59) with just under three minutes left in the game. Endicott had a chance to capture the road win, but could not find the bucket in the final moments. Coast Guard drilled two free throws in the final seconds to ice the game and extend their winning streak to four games.
