Defense Shines In Endicott's 59-35 Road Win At Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Endicott women's basketball team's defense shined in a 59-35 road win at Salve Regina University Saturday afternoon on Alumni Day inside the Rodgers Recreation Center.

In a game in which the Gulls never trailed, Endicott opened the contest on a 10-0 run until Salve Regina got on the scoreboard with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter.

With 3:47 left in the first half, freshman guard Kerri Beland (Attleboro, Mass.) got the Seahawks as close as they would get the rest of the game with a layup to cut the deficit to 24-16.

Endicott steadily built a 32-18 edge heading into the halftime break and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.

Sophomore guard Hannah Kiernan (Wenham, Mass.) paced all scorers with a game-high 14 points on 6-of-11 from the floor, and 2-of-5 from the free throw line, along with four rebounds, two assists, a team-leading five steals and one block.

Endicott was able to spread the ball around well as four other Gulls chipped in at least eight points. Junior guard Ilyza Holman (Ashland, Mass.) had nine, while sophomore guard Gabriella Coppola (Watertown, Mass.), senior guard Kelsey Cuddy (Madison, Conn.), sophomore forward Hannah Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine) all tallied eight points apiece.

 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Sophomore forward Sam Charette (Wenham, Mass.) grabbed a team-leading six rebounds.
  • The Gulls are 7-1 in away games this season and undefeated on the road in conference play.
  • Endicott is on a three-game win streak. (Tied for the longest this season)
  • 35 points in the lowest total allowed by the Gulls season.
  • Endicott forced 27 Salve Regina turnovers and scored 24 points off the takeaways.

FOR THE FOES

  • Junior center Jillian Woodward (Orono, Maine) led the way with 12 points.
  • Woodward and freshman guard Mikayla Roderick (New Bedford, Mass.) brought down a game-high eight rebounds apiece as the Seahawks won the battle off the glass, 42-38. 

NOTES

  • Endicott is 12-15 all-time and 3-12 on the road at Salve Regina dating back prior to the 2002 season.
  • The Gulls have won five of the past six meetings and swept the 2015-16 series.
  • The Gulls won, 74-60, in the most recent meeting before today on Dec. 8, 2015.

Both teams hit the hardwood again on Tuesday, February 2 as the Gulls (12-7, 10-2 CCC) will host Curry at 7:30 p.m., while the Seahawks (7-12, 6-6 CCC) welcome Eastern Nazarene for a conference tilt at 5:30 p.m.
