BEVERLY, Mass. - The semester-long internship is one of the essential pieces of Endicott's experiential learning model which includes two 120-hour internships, a semester-long internship, and senior thesis. In essence, it gets undergraduate students career ready with a loaded resume geared towards whatever their postgraduate endeavors may be.

Four of the members of the Class of 2018 for the Gulls softball program - while balancing strength and conditioning programming, captains practices, fall ball, and the start to their 2017-18 campaign - have all completed their semester-long internship. Two of these exceptional student-athletes - Mikaela Mallozzi (Shelton, Conn.) and Emily Sharpe (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) - gave us an insight into their experience working in their desired professions through our new question and answer series.

Semester-Long Internship: Hopeful Journeys
Previous Internships:

What inspired you to pursue an internship at this organization or what inspired you to go into the specific industry in which you are working?

I chose to do an internship at this organization because I knew I always wanted to work with children. However, it wasn't until freshman year when I was introduced to idea of working in the field of special education.

What were some of your most meaningful experiences on the job and what did you learn?

I experience meaningful moments every day at my internship. Watching how much the child has learned and how far they have come with their academic, social, vocational, speech, and occupational programs with the help of my fellow teachers and I is such terrific feeling.

How did your internship help clarify your postgraduate career pursuits?

I see myself working at this internship location when I graduate.

What advice would you give students that are either just starting the internship program at Endicott or students that will be going on semester-long internship?

My advice would be to do it somewhere you know you will enjoy spending your time and learning. Don't just go to close location or a location that pays. An internship is not about convenience, it is about finding your future self.

Semester-Long Internship: Gorton's Seafood, Quality Assurance
Previous Internships: HD Physical Therapy, Adirondack Cardiology/Glens Falls Hospital

What inspired you to pursue an internship at this organization or what inspired you to go into the specific industry in which you are working?

What inspired me was that it was something completely out of my element. My freshman year I would have never expected to be working in the food industry, I saw myself doing my semester internship at in the healthcare field. However, after being here for 3 months I would not look back. The purpose of the internship program is to explore the possible careers in your field and I can truthfully say that I have.

What were some of your most meaningful experiences on the job and what did you learn?

The people at Gorton's are so unbelievably welcoming, friendly, and helpful, they made it easy to settle in and helped me to feel comfortable in the work field. I loved working in the Microbiology Lab because it allowed me to work on being independent in a laboratory setting and I was able to obtain a wealth of knowledge on microorganisms in the food industry. Finally, my main project was working on HACCP Plans (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points). I enjoyed this because I was able to see the results of the work that I put into these Plans, which are critical to the Gorton's and the food production industry.

How did your internship help clarify your postgraduate career pursuits?

My internship clarified my postgraduate career pursuits by it made me realize where I am going to be in 10 years. I know that within this time frame I will have eventually gone to and graduated from Physician's Assistant school. This has been my passion and ultimate goal since my junior year of high school. However, my internship so far has helped me realize that I actually really enjoy working in this field and in the meantime would not mind continuing to work in the Quality Assurance field and continuing to expand my knowledge.

What advice would you give students that are either just starting the internship program at Endicott or students that will be going on semester-long internship?

My advice would be to explore your options and to go in with an open mind, your spectrum can never be too broad. Internships give you experience and without experience, you never know what is going to happen. Always consider your options and enjoy the experience.
