Stats

The Gulls won in their final game at the Rebel Spring Games against a tough opponent in Geneva College. Geneva, from Pennsylvania, finished 42-12 last season.

Both teams played tough defense all game. In the 5th inning, with the bases loaded, Dana Leopold scored on a sacrifice fly for Geneva. The Gulls would answer in the bottom of the 5th, when Laura Schack smacked a triple to right-center field and scored when Nicole Reather reached on an error by the shortstop.

The game would be tied 1-1 through 7 innings. In the 9th, with Genevas Jen Picard on third, Rebecca Stewart reached on an error, allowing the run to score.

With the game on the line, the Gulls stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the 9th and placed Megan Young on second. Jennilee Danielson sacrifice bunted her to third base and Elyse Colby singled Young in to tie the game. The game would remain tied at 2-2 through 10 1/2 innings. In the bottom of the 11th inning, Reather was placed on second and advanced to third on a passed ball. The Gulls then sent up slugger Megan Huckins. Huckins hit a line drive base hit down the first base line scoring the winning run.

The game was as close as it was because of the great defense the Gulls played. Great defensive plays were made by Colby (SS), Danielson (CF) and Kirstin Wing (RF).

The pitching was superb once again as well. Captain Laura Mangini, pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing only 1 earned run on three hits. Once again, the relief pitching of Robyn Savitske was tremendous. She earned a tough win, coming into a tie game in the 5th inning. Savitske gave up 0 hits and had 7 strikeouts in route to her first win of the season.

The Gulls finished up their Florida trip with an overall winning record of 4-3, and play next on Thursday March 25 versus Babson College.
