Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Newbury & Eastern Nazarene

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Endicott men's volleyball team shut out Newbury and Eastern Nazarene on Saturday afternoon in a tri-match hosted by Newbury at the Pappas Gymnasium on the campus of Hellenic College. The Gulls defeated Newbury, 3-0, by scores of 25-12, 25-13, and 25-15 before they downed Eastern Nazarene, 3-0, by scores of 25-12, 25-9, and 25-13 to complete the tri-match sweep.

MATCH ONE: Endicott 3, Newbury 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-15)

Bryn Lipton (Rockford, Ill.) posted a match-high 11 kills on 16 attempts (.625) to guide the Gulls to their first win of the day. Tim Fieseler (Bridgewater, N.J.) also added seven kills on 11 swings (.455), while Jeremy Doski (Sandy Hook, Conn.) notched five kills for Endicott.

Chad Riorden (Fairport, N.Y.) and Devin Racey (Voorheesville, N.Y.) split duties running the offense as Riorden had 16 assists and Racey collected 15 helpers.

As a team, Endicott defeated Newbury in under an hour – 55 minutes to be exact – behind a .475 hitting percentage, 14 digs, and 14 block assists. The Gulls also limited the Nighthakws to a negative .127 hitting percentage.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 

  • Match one of the day featured 12 tied scores and five lead changes.
  • The Gulls had four student-athletes hit over .450 with a minimum of five total attempts.
  • Daniel Toth (Glenwood, N.J.)Ryan Sutherland (Fairport, N.Y.), and Fieseler all had three block assists. 

FOR THE FOES 

  • Matt Sepe (Cranston, R.I.) paced the Nighthawks with eight kills.
  • Joshua Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) finished second on the squad with four putaways.
  • Oscar Chavez (Independence, Ore.) ran the offense on 15 assists. 

MATCH TWO: Endicott 3, Eastern Nazarene 0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-13) 

In match two, Sutherland guided Endicott offensively with nine kills on 13 swings for a .615 hitting percentage. 

Lipton chipped in with seven kills (.667), while Doski compiled seven of his own, and Seth Braquet (Destrehan, La.) hammered home five kills. 

Racey ran the majority of the offense on 23 assists, while on the defensive end Ryan Healy (Fair Lawn, N.J.) recorded a team-high eight digs, and Tyler Willgoos (Newington, Conn.) ranked second on the squad with six. 

Endicott never trailed in the first two sets, and only played through one tied score and a lead change in set three (2-0 deficit, 3-2 lead change). 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 

  • The Gulls hit .460 on 41 kills, 12 errors, and 63 attempts.
  • Endicott held Eastern Nazarene to a .036 hitting percentage, and only saw the Lions registered eight digs.
  • Four student-athletes hit .400 or better on a minimum of five attempts. 

FOR THE FOES 

  • Kenny Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) guided Eastern Nazarene's attack with six kills.
  • Colin Fischer (Lansdale, Pa.) and James Garofalo (Commack, N.Y.) tallied two kills apiece.
  • Matthew Tyree (Lansdale, Pa.) finished with a team-high 12 assists. 

NOTES

  • Lipton had 18 kills total over both matches for a .640 hitting percentage.
  • Racey collected 38 assists combined in both victories.
  • The Gulls hit .468 as a team in both matches.

WHAT'S NEXT 

Endicott (16-9, 9-0 NECC) hosts Lesley and Southern Vermont in a conference tri-match on Saturday, April 1 at 11 AM and 3 PM, respectively. Eastern Nazarene (9-8, 4-6 NECC) takes on Pine Manor on March 28 at 7 PM, while Newbury (6-12, 3-6 NECC) travels to Regis College for a league matchup on March 28 at 7 PM.
