BEVERLY, Mass. – Led by 11 kills from senior Jeremy Siden (Natick, Mass.), the Endicott men’s volleyball team pushed their New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) record to 7-0 on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over the Eagles of Daniel Webster College.
Endicott finished each of the first two sets strong and held off a late Daniel Webster attack to finish the match 25-11, 25-17, 25-22 and improve to 9-6 on the season.
Siden also led the way with 10 digs for the Gulls, who used a nine-point service run by freshman Thomas Stoeckinger (Malibu, Calif.) to seize control of the first set, after the Eagles hung with them through the first twenty points.
In the third set, the visitors grabbed a 13-9 advantage thanks to a kill by sophomore outside hitter Joe Walz (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) and three straight hitting errors from the Gulls. Endicott rattled off five straight points, served by sophomore Mike Coniglione (Glenville, N.Y.) that included two kills from classmate Lance Pepper (Torrington, Conn.). Pepper had four kills in the match, on eight attempts, and also contributed a service ace.
Chris Shannon (Ronkonkoma,N.Y.) delivered two straight service aces to give the Eagles a one-point lead at 19-18, but his service error tied the game and a kill by Siden gave Endicott the lead for good. Siden would collect two more kills en route to victory, including one to deliver the game-winning point for the Gulls.
Setter Jeremy Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) helped the Gulls with 17 assists and a service ace of his own, as well as six digs. Fellow setter Carter Roche (Clifton Park, N.J.) contributed 12 assists, while sophomore Aaron Jesse (Okinawa, Japan) pitched in with four digs of his own.
Stoeckinger and Matt Devendorf pitched in four kills apiece and Devendorf was in on four blocks as well. Sophomore Travis Netherton (Waukegan, Ill.) assisted on three blocks and added five kills of his own.
Shannon (Ronkonokama, N.Y.) led the Eagles with nine kills, while Walz finished seven attacks. Daniel Webster was paced with 12 assists from Eric Smith (Clay, N.Y) and 10 helpers from Kyle Clement (Weymouth, Mass.). The Eagles got digs from up and down their lineup, including eight from freshman Joel Hendrix (Keneohe, Hawaii), who also had five kills and six apiece from Clement and Walz.
Coming into Tuesday’s contest, the Eagles had gone four straight matches without dropping a set, two of them to NECC opponents. The Gulls have now beaten Daniel Webster in all seven of their meetings since the 2009 season and has gone 21-0 in sets during those contests.
Endicott will face a challenging non-conference opponent in Springfield College for their next test. The Pride will be in town on Thursday night for a 7:00 match.
Daniel Webster sees their overall record even up at 4-4, with a conference record of 2-4. The Eagles will be in action on Thursday night when they host Mount Ida (7:00 pm).
