BEVERLY, Mass. –The Endicott men’s soccer team, searching for their first win of the season, hosted the fifth-ranked team in the New England by the NSCAA, Springfield College, and earned a 0-0 tie through 110 minutes of the pitch Tuesday evening.
The Gulls, now 0-5-1 (0-2 CCC), hope to carry some momentum into their weekend tilt with conference rival Gordon at Endicott Stadium on Saturday, September 24th at 4:30 pm. Springfield remains unbeaten at 4-0-3 (1-0 NEWMAC) and will continue their league schedule on Saturday on the road against Wheaton at 1:00 pm.
Through 90 minutes of regulations, both teams were evenly matched with Springfield holding a slight edge in shot attempts, 9-to-8. The Pride, however, forced Endicott’s freshman keeper Aaron Kanter (Medfield, Mass.) to make four saves while the Gulls struggled to get any of their shot attempts on net.
Neither team attempted a shot in the first overtime but in the second overtime, both teams had quality attempts to score the golden goal. Springfield freshman midfielder Zach Dutter (Dallas, Pa.) had two bids at the net with one sailing wide right and the other, a rocket fired directly at Kanter for the save.
Endicott saw sophomore forward Alex Elia (Somers, Conn.) kick right-footed blasts at the net, but one was saved by Pride senior goalie Brett Bascom (New London, N.H.) and the other was defensive save at the post made by sophomore midfielder Scott Morneault (Bristol, Conn.). Gulls freshman Stephen Joyce (Rome, N.Y.) attempted Endicott’s last shot attempt on goal but Bascom made the save to preserve the 0-0 tie.
Springfield committed 20 fouls in the match and earned one yellow card in the 83rd minute to John Mankus (Vernon, Conn.) while Endicott had 16 fouls with Nick Goldman (South Windsor, Conn.) being issued a yellow card in the 90th minute of the match.
Kanter, whose goalie record went to 0-1-1, made five saves between the posts. Bascom (1-0-3) made two saves and recorded his third match in-a-row with no goals allowed.
