Curry's Late Goal Beats Men's Soccer 2-1
MILTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Alex Elia (Somers, Conn.) converted a free kick for his first goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as the Curry Colonels defeated Endicott 2-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men’s soccer action. With the win the Colonels improve to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.  The Gulls fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the CCC.

The first half was a great competitive half for both teams. Endicott had four shots, three on goal, three corners and seven fouls, while Curry, attempted six shots, two of them on target.

The Colonels appeared to score twice to take the lead, but had their first tally called back after deliberation by the refs. Eventually junior Devin Sadlers (Somerset, Mass.) made a nice pass that got through the Endicott defenders to Eric Guglielmello (Paxton, Mass.), who finished the chance.

The Colonels held on to the 1-0 lead for just over 20 minutes until the Gulls tied the game with just 3:46 left to play in the half. The hosts committed a foul right outside the 18-yard box and Elia took the free kick and hit the back right corner of the net right over the Colonel’s goaltender, senior Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, N.J.). Time would expire and the teams would head into intermission tied at one apiece.

Both teams had chances to take the lead in the second half, but it wasn’t until the 78th minute that the Colonels would score the eventual game-winner. Freshman Jonathan Hurley (Foxboro, Mass.) scored off an assist from freshman Ethan Ford (Brunswick, Maine). Ford crossed the ball from the corner of the field and Hurley was there for the one touch.

The Gulls were able to get off five second half shots, four that landed on net, but Newsome was able to make the saves for his team’s first conference win of the season.

Endicott finished the game with nine shots, five on net, seven corner kicks and 17 fouls. Curry finished with 14 shots, seven on net, three corners and 13 fouls.

Newsome earned the win in net with four saves. In his first game of the season, Endicott junior Daniel Higgins (Kingston, R.I.) made five saves but took the loss.

Endicott next hosts Springfield on Tuesday, September 20 for a 7:00 p.m. game. The Colonels will travel to Emmanuel College the same evening for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
