Gulls Fend off a Feisty Salem State, 2-1

Sept. 10, 2004

The EC men's soccer team knocked off local rival Salem State in a dogfight yesterday, 2-1. The win moves Endicott to 2-1 on the season and ensures at least a .500 record going into conference play.

Endicott dominated most of the first half compiling 9 shots on Salem State goalkeeper, Tim Doucette. EC recorded its first tally at the 23:00 minute mark when senior Pete Mendel collected a through ball and beat the defender to unleash a shot that nearly went through the back of the net. Collecting his second assist of the season on Mendel's goal was junior Steve Gloria. Salem remained scoreless throughout the first half only recording 4 shots on goal.

The second half brought a bit more excitement. EC strengthened its lead, scoring only 5 minutes into the first half. Senior Josh Lewis connected on a gorgeous cross by freshman standout Elias Carrero that enabled Endicott to feel a bit better about their lead. But Salem State had other plans. With only 7 minutes remaining in the game, Salem State Viking Svet Wilson scored on a break away to come within a goal. The Vikings saw a window of opportunity and pressured the EC defense but to no avail.

Junior goalkeeper Colin Kemble again put in a solid showing and turned away any last attempts. Eric Booth, freshman out of Belchertown MA, had his best game as a college player turning back many Viking threats.

The EC Men are home on Wednesday to face Curry College at 4 pm at the stadium.
