EC Knocks UNE Out of Playoff Contention

Oct. 31, 2003

Beverly, MA- In a 4-0 performance the Gulls knocked UNE out of playoff contention and proved they are ready for tournament play. With the win EC finished their regular season 7-2-2 in the conference (9-5-4 overall), ranked 4th in CCC standings. The Gulls will face off against 5th seed Colby Sawyer tomorrow in what will be a rematch of last year's Quarterfinal game. The difference this year, the Gulls are seeded 4th not 5th, giving them home field advantage. Kick off time is 2:00 on the Endicott stadium.

The Gulls came out dominating yesterday, scoring 3 goals in the first half. Senior midfielder John Haskos showed he will be missed next year scoring the first 2 goals for the Gulls. Taking a free kick from 20 yards out Haskos placed the ball in the side netting 15 minutes into play. Twelve minutes later sophomore midfielder Daniel Duvernoy found Haskos who scored his second for the night. Just before the half time buzzer, Duvernoy played the ball into the corner to freshman midfielder Joshua Golden who crossed it to junior J.P. Marquez who slid to tip the ball into the net giving the Gulls a 3-0 advantage.

Play got a little sloppy for the Gulls in the second half, but they got the job done, preventing UNE from scoring and finishing the day with one final goal with only 5 minutes remaining in the contest. Freshman midfielder Brian Thopsey found junior forward Nathan Briggs who beat the keeper for his fifth goal of the season.

Mitch Donar recorded his ninth shutout of the season with six saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Steven Bishop recorded 3 saves in the loss.
