Tufts sneak by Gulls 1-0

Oct. 2, 2003

Medford, MA - Despite strong play from Gull's defenders Ryan Vigilant (Westford, MA) and Chris Croteau (Groveland, MA) and midfielders Adam Paul (Waunakee, WI) and John Haskos (Old Lyme, CT), EC fell to Tufts 1-0 in men's soccer action on Kraft Field yesterday. The loss drops the Gulls to .500 at 5-5, while the Jumbos victory moves them up to .500 overall at 2-2-2. This was the first game ever between the teams.

Tufts managed to control the tempo, earning an 8-1 advantage in shots for the first half. Sophomore Mike Guigli (Stonington, CT) scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 32nd minute (assisted by junior Greg Scott of Durham, NC) to give Tufts the win.

Endicott did have two brilliant chances to tie the score. Early in the second half, freshman Paul hit the side of the net with a one-on-one shot from close range at the right post. Then shortly after senior Josh Pierson's (Cromwell, CT) open shot from out front was just off the goal.

Endicott sophomore goalkeeper Colin Kemble (Saugerties, MA) made four saves in the loss. At the other end, junior Matt Sullivan (Medfield, MA) earned the first shutout of his career, making five saves.

Tufts earned a 13-7 advantage in shots and did not allow an Endicott corner kick while taking four of their own.

The Gulls are off this weekend, but will return to conference play Tuesday, October 7th versus Eastern Nazarene here at home.
