BEVERLY, Mass. - The semester-long internship is one of the essential pieces of Endicott's experiential learning model which includes two 120-hour internships, a semester-long internship, and senior thesis. In essence, it gets undergraduate students career ready with a loaded resume geared towards whatever their postgraduate endeavors may be.

Three of the members of the Class of 2018 for the Gulls men's ice hockey program - while balancing strength and conditioning programming, captains practices, official team practice, and the start to their 2017-18 campaign - have all completed their semester-long internship. One of these exceptional student-athletes - Ross Olsson (Billerica, Mass.) - gave us an insight into his experience working in his desired professions through our new question and answer series.

Semester-Long Internship: ProQuip Golf USA, Inside Sales and Marketing
Previous Internships: TSG Sports Group

What inspired you to pursue an internship at this organization or what inspired you to go into the specific industry in which you are working?

I wanted to intern for ProQuip Golf USA due to the fact that it is an up and coming company in the US. I am working with three other people so the small numbers is something that drew me in where I'm not just another intern.

What were some of your most meaningful experiences on the job and what did you learn?

The ability to go out into the field was something that was valuable. Being able to learn how to speak to a prospective client when selling such a great product. I believe that the ability to sell is a skill that is vital down the road and future endeavors.

How did your internship help clarify your postgraduate career pursuits?

With this internship, I have enjoyed it so far as I am able to talk to many different people and also go out on the road. I would rather work in a job where I'm not at a desk all day and where I can talk to different people. The ability to talk to different people is where connections are made and connections are always good to have as someone graduating from college. After graduation, I plan on playing professional hockey either overseas or in the US.

What advice would you give students that are either just starting the internship program at Endicott or students that will be going on semester-long internship?

I would tell students to take the internship program seriously as the more connections and more skills you can acquire from the first and second internship can lead to more semester-long internships. I was able to learn to use pixlr, constant contact, and mail chimp while at other internships which helped me build my resume and get my internship at ProQuip Golf USA.
