Athan Goulos Leads Gulls To Sixth Place Finish At NEIGA DIII Championships

BREWSTER, Mass. – Competing in the final competition of the fall season, the Endicott men's golf team finished sixth out of 20 teams at the NEIGA DIII Championships held at The Captains Course in Brewster, Mass.

The Gulls were led by Athan Goulos (Peabody, Mass.) who finished in fifth place shooting a two-day score of 151. On day one, Goulos finished two strokes back from the lead and tied for second place by shooting a 75 before settling for fifth overall. For his efforts, Goulos was named to the All-New England Region Team.

Sophomore Christopher Billings (Portland, Maine) finished tied for 24th with a two-day total of 160, and junior Drew Benshoff (Concord, Mass.)  posted an opening round of 81 prior to carding  an 82 on day two to close his championship appearance tied for 39th.

Meanwhile, junior Ben Palazzo (Farmington, Conn.) finished with a two-round total of 165 to end in a tie for 56th, while senior Dan Negus (Pembroke, Mass.) ended his fall campaign finishing 91st after posting a combined 176.

"It was tough to gain momentum with the blustery wind both days," said Endicott head coach Tom Smith. "We battled through it and were able to finish a few shots better than our day one total. Overall we had a very successful fall season and we are looking forward to working hard on swing mechanics and fundamentals in the offseason as we prepare for our conference championship this spring."

BEYOND THE CARD

  • The Gulls have now posted three top-10 finishes at the NEIGA DIII Championship as the team finished seventh in 2014, ninth in 2015 and sixth in 2016.
  • Goulos has now finished in the top five four different times this season and has also been named to the NEIGA All-New England team. 

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott has now finished its fall season and will work throughout the offseason as the Gulls ready for a spring season that will see them compete for their fifth Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title in six years.
