MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Endicott men's basketball team fell to No. 17 nationally ranked Middlebury College, 101-96, on Sunday evening at Pepin Gymnasium.
Middlebury shot a season-high 57.7-percent from the field (41-for-71), saw five student-athletes reach double-figures, and held a 48-22 margin in the paint to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Tied 73-73 at the 9:45 mark of the second half, the Panthers used 15-2 run to break away from Endicott down the stretch. Matt Folger (Weston, Conn.) guided Middlebury offensively during the spurt with eight points, while Griffin Kornaker (Bradenton, Fla.) punctuated the run with a three-pointer at 6:18 to give the Panthers their largest lead of the game at 13 (88-75) with 6:18 left to play.
Endicott answered late in the contest, however, as the Gulls brought the game under 10 points with a three-pointer from Keith Brown (Pelham, N.H.) at the 1:15 mark (101-93). Brown then eclipsed the 1,000 career point plateau on the game's final made basket via another three-pointer at 1:02 (101-96).
Brown is now the 16th student-athlete in program history to register 1,000 career points. Brown also is the second fastest student-athlete (55 games) to accomplish the feat and is the sixth student-athlete to break the 1,000 point threshold in his junior season.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Jon D'Orlando '98 is the only student-athlete to reach the 1,000 career point plateau faster than Brown. D'Orlando did so in 51 career games.
- D'Orlando and Brown are followed on that list by Eric Simonelli '01, who eclipsed 1,000 points in approximately 58 games.
- Brown is currently at 1,001 career points.
- Kyle Henderson (Southborough, Mass.) notched a career-high 26 points (9-17 FG, 3-8 3PT, 5-5 FT). It marks the second straight game Henderson has scored at least 20 points.
- Matt McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) registered 23 points (8-16 FG, 7-14 3PT). It's the first 20-plus-point game of the season for McDevitt.
- Endicott led by as many as seven at the 6:09 mark of the first half (39-32).
- Today's game featured eight ties and 14 lead changes.
- The Gulls' last lead came at 10:38 of the second half (73-70, McDevitt 3-pointer).
- Middlebury is ranked No. 17 on the D3hoops.com Preseason Poll.
