WORCESTER, Mass. – Endicott competed in its second race of the spring season on Sunday, April 10th on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachuetts, facing crews from Clark, Simmons, Mt. Holyoke, UVM, and Bryant. It was a chilly day with a strong tailwind that weakened as the day went on.
The Women's Varsity 8 launched first, coxed by senior Katherine Delaney-Rodriguez (Belmont, Mass.), with, from stern to bow, Victoria Ziolek (Nashua, N.H.), Rachele Stein (Washington, D.C.), Christina Jocelyn (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Michelle Lorenti (Andover, Mass.), Kendra Kirby (Redding, Conn.), Georgie Klinger (New Hartford, Conn.), Gabrielle Wiggin (Lebanon, Maine), and Michaela Raftery (Nashua, N.H.).
Delaney commented, "The start was extremely chaotic but we regained our composure within the first couple of strokes."
The boat stayed with Simmons, UVM, Mt. Holyoke, Clark, and Bryant for the first 1,000 meters but slowly fell behind. The boat finished at a time of 8:53.21.
Kirby said "We definitely have things to work on but everyone worked hard and I couldn't ask anything else from my team."
The Men's Varsity 4+ raced next, facing four UVM boats and one Clark boat. Jake Somosky (Glastonbury, Conn.) stroked the boat with Brendan McGuire (Kings Park, N.Y.) at three seat, Jesse Gottesdiener (Newton Center, Mass.) at two seat, and Addison Culupa (Jericho, Vt.) in bow. They maintained third place until about the 500 meter mark and slipped into fourth place as UVM B made a move at about 1,000 meters.
Coxswain Nicholas Hadley (West Boylston, Mass.) said, "We held our own for the first 2/3 of the race."
The men finished with a strong time of 7:51.89.
The Women's Varsity 4+ finished up the day, racing in a new lineup. The boat was stoked by Brenna Shanahan (Shelton, Conn.), Kendra Czernicki (North Chelmsford, Mass.) at three seat, Erika Mercieri (Monson, Mass.) at two seat, and Rachael Lemieux (Claremont, N.H.) in bow.
Coxswain Stephanie Leone (Oxford, Conn.) reported that the start was rushed and the boat did not have great alignment, but the team worked hard to stay with Clark and Bryant, two very fast crews. They stayed within about two boat lengths of Clark and Bryant until Bryant made a move at about 800 meters.
Leone said, "The girls wanted to work on lengthening out and keeping a good ratio and they definitely improved upon last weeks' race."
The women finished at a time of 8:56.45.
The Endicott crew team continues their season this Saturday at the Lowell Invitational.
